Try some installing Linux (any flavor, Slackware recommended) - they tend to have heavy-duty formatting utilities that can go deeper than MS crap. You may also want to try using Partition Magic rescue disk. Worst case scenario, try ghosting the drive with some data (this would at least create some kind of file system).

You may also wish to post this question on some of the Linux forums - those guys take pride in finding the answer to most obscure mishaps, unlike my lazy ass that doesn't feel like searching on Sat. night.

eheh, i already tried partition magic (couldn't see the drive) and a linux mandrake distro gave me an error - couldn't write to partition table (maybe the table is what's messed up)

i'll try a slackware distro tomorrow, but i doubt it'll be any luck.
