New Label

Hello all you producers and DJs. I just wanted to get a little information, as I will be starting up a new label sometime in the future (hopefully soon).

The label will be based in Northern California for the time being, but with digital files and all, I should be able to accept music from all over the world. I am still in the preliminary stages, so this is not an imminent event. However, I just wanted to know if there was any interest for people to have their work produced under a label.

It seems that artists can produce and press their own cds for very little nowadays, the purpose of the label would be to promote the work area- and world-wide. Maybe help the image of trance music in America, I don't know.

Right now I am just looking for your thoughts about a label. What would you want from a label, what makes a good label, etc. I would want this company to be based on an understanding between the label and the artist.

Thanks for the info, hopefully I will have more information (and an investor or two) the next time I post. Take care.

heh, its gunna be tough at the moment

i aint no expert, but i reckon the main thing u need to concentrate on is the promotion, you need to b able to get the vinyl into shops outside america as well as inside

also, dont release too much stuff.. thats what killed lightning

find a good distributer... Prime or Unique...

btw, what music genre do you aim to release?

tu_face, I don't know, my oppinion is exactly the opposite... I'd say try to release as much as possible, and try to find 2-3 big names as remixers...

I am going to try and release trance tracks on vinyl and some local rock on CD. I am going to focus mainly on the trance though, as that is where I have the most knowledge and experience.

Thanks for the help so far, I am in the process of talking to distributors. Anyone know any of the legal stuff that comes with trying to release outside the US? I don't want to limit my markets.

I'll keep you updated. If you have tracks you want me to hear, email me at [email protected] with a link and I will start the process of finding artists.

I think you should focus first on finding a good distributor. If you can get your vinyls into record stores aross North America and Europe, you wont need to do much promotion. When DJs buy the records and play them in clubs you get enough promotion as it is.

I would also try to send free whitelables to as many big name DJs as possible.

It might be a good idea to focus on the aesthetic appeal of the actual records. I know when I go into a record store, my attention is drastically increased when I see a nice looking vinyl. A full colour high gloss sleeve is definately a plus. Also, what might be cheaper than that is to produce a coloured vinyl in a clear sleeve, also a major attention grabber.

Another factor of course is to release great tracks

You'll get an e-mail from me soon.

Regards

Safe to say that 'quanity' isn't the right approach. This is exactly why Lightning Records went under, because of the shear # of releases they were putting out, majority of which were shit. I would recommend you focus on releasing good music rather than shitloads of music. And yeah as it's been recommended, secure a deal with a publisher first before doing anything

I will not be sacrificing quality for quantity, no sir. Artists I sign will be top quality independent artists, no doubt about it.

It looks like this whole thing may happen sooner rather than later, I am in negotiations with an investor (or two) and am currently talking with distributors.

If anyone would like to send demos (through email or snail) let me know, I will be happy to listen to tracks. Email me with any questions you have.

Well, things are on track for the creation of a new label. I am currently looking for a good US distributor, or just a West Coast one.

A couple questions for you all:

What would you, as an artist, want from a label?

and How would you promote a European release of your track from the US (or vice versa)?

Thanks, still learning a lot about the soft underbelly of the music biz.

I would want very open communication with the label. I'd like to be informed of exactly what's happening and when it's happening.

I'd want a bio section on your label website.

I would like a copy of the record sent to me free of charge.

And.. I'd like a professional legal contract that I could run by my lawyer prior to the manufacturing of the track.
