straying off the subject a little, but kinna relevent
Republican prisoner attacked by prison staff.
The IRPWA would like to take this opportunity to bring to the public’s
attention the latest in a series of physical and verbal attacks on
republican prisoners by prison staff.
Republican prisoner Brendan O’Connor was viciously attacked by prison staff
in Maghaberry gaol last Saturday 5th April 2003 at 6.00pm.
Mr O’Connor was returning from delivering a copy of the Irish News under the
door of a fellow republican prisoner (a standard practise) when he was
detained by two prison wardens. When confronted by the wardens, words were
exchanged and Mr O’Connor was immediately set upon by one of the guards who
appeared to be in a highly agitated condition. When the prisoner tried to
defend himself he was set upon by the other member of staff and subsequently
received a severe beating by a further nine members of the prison riot squad
which resulted in severe bruising to his legs, arms and upper body. Mr
O’Connor, from Co Tyrone was beaten all the way to the punishment blocks
were he was subjected to continued sectarian harassment throughout the
weekend. Mr O’Connor believes that the prison guards who initially attacked
him had been drinking and he stated that they had been hurling sectarian
abuse at him just prior to the assault.
Brendan O’Connor’s solicitor was prevented from seeing his client until
today (Tuesday 8th April 2003) and consequently the IRPWA re awaiting
further developments.
Republican prisoners in Maghaberry already live in constant fear of attack
from Loyalist prisoners who outnumber them five to one in many cases. Having
to endure the same sort of physical and verbal attacks from so-called
‘professional’ and ‘objective’ members of staff is intolerable.
The struggle of the republican prisoners is a microcosm of the republican
struggle in general, the state will use fair means or foul to exercise
control over those who refuse to accept it’s legitimacy.
The spectre of drunken, sectarian prison guards viciously attacking
republican prisoners evokes terrible memories of the pre-1981 era. The
reasons for such attacks today are the same reason that they took place in
the H-Blocks of Long Kesh, the refusal of the republican prisoners to be
criminalised for opposing British rule in Ireland.
The IRPWA reiterate the necessity for immediate segregation of political
prisoners as a first step in the restoration of political status.
