Angry SARS: events being cancelled/business hurt

I appologize for adding another SARS related thread.. but..
all i'm gonna say is..

who pays for all this paranoia??

answer: we do.

SARS dampening business

Tourist industry, Chinatown pinched; grocery delivery service prospers

there's nothing wrong with being careful.. but i'm getting pretty pissed off at the media blowing this outta proportions and fear mongering being caused by a lot of people. we're gonna end up paying for all this .. in worse ways than some.

Federal Health Minister Anne McLellan said yesterday the travel alerts are an "overreaction," and if an individual takes "sensible and reasonable precautions, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't go to Toronto."

"I go to Toronto every week. I fly back and forth and through the airport, and I'm going to continue to do that," she told reporters. "There's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't. And you should go to restaurants in Toronto and you should go to the movies and you should be out and about spending ... money."

The minister said she's concerned about the potential for economic fallout if travellers heed the travel advisories, and suggested the federal government take steps to minimize the damage. Already a major conference of 12,000 cancer experts, that was to have been held in the city this weekend, has been cancelled, a loss that's estimated to cost city coffers millions.

"I think that it is probably a situation where our Department of Foreign Affairs, our embassies and consulates in various countries need to be out there making sure that people understand what is happening and isn't happening in this country."

see if pvd cancelled because of that..tho i dunno

the asians are going to be blamed and the hate will continue. I saw it in college yesterday, on the bus, when I was walking home. It's tough to see everyone hating a group of people because 10 ppl came down with a disease but it originated elsewhere. Also this is be a tremendous blow to our tourism which Toronto's economy relies on heavily.

i haven't witnessed any ill feelings due to this disease. but that might be because I live in a predominantly asian area. Although, my prof in one class did tell me and a few other friends that he's been told to avoid associating with asians, but he tells us that he think it's BS. The virus has already spread out to other communities who are not asian in descent so i don't think it matters anymore at this point. this virus is indescriminant..

Aids was blamed on the Africans.
Small pox blamed on native indians.
SARS blamed on the Chinese.

Wake up people!!!!!!!!!!!
This is what people do when they are afraid!!! They look for differences and exploit them. Fear breeds discrimination.
Aside from illness being related to a race just think of how it must be for middle eastern people to board airplanes since 9-11.
Unfortunately ignorance is rampant. Deal with it!
Asians shouldn't be surprised in the least by the way people are reacting to this. After all there was a time where you guys had to pay a head tax just to live in British Columbia because people were scared that all the good jobs would be taken .

how could it be blamed on the native Indians.. ? i thought small pox was brought over to the Americas by Europeans .. ??

anyways.. the main reason why this virus spread in Toronto and not as much in Vancouver which has just about as many Asians and the port of entry for them, is because the carrier failed to seek immediate medical attention when she was infected and stayed at home thereby infecting her son who also died from the disease. at this point health care workers at the hospitals had been infected. the carrier who brought it to Vancouver was already really sick and apparently it's less contagious at this point than in its early stages. Toronto already raised the red flag so this guy was put into immediate incubation ..

so basically the reason is ..
1. Timing
2. Bad luck

result:
1. NO PVD!

Though it is a serious threat, I think it being a bit overexagerated.

If the media can make money off of it by hyping it up, then they will.
