Like everyone said. Use a combination of things. Sometimes a record may not have been recorded as loud as another, then you'd want to mess with the gain. I generally use the crossfader just to keep oriented where I am in my transition, and the volume faders to keep my levels good. Using all 3, hand in hand, can really lead to smooth transitions. Keep experimenting, you'll find what works best for you.
