Buying a Vestax

hey guys,

well today i went over to this guys house and looked at this mixer he was selling it's a Vestax PMC 17A.

because there is something wrong with channel 3 pretty sure it just needs a new input fader, it has a lot of female inputs on the back which i need to play around with see whats going.

he will let me have it for 175 CND, now this mixer is like super discontinued and i couldnt find a lot of information on it, i was just wondering if i am getting a good deal, he let me play around with the mixer for a week to see if im happy with it and everything.

The EQs are lovley on this mixer, but something is wrong with either the crossfader or the third channels (PGM2) phono line, im not really sure but stereo line(CDs and shit, not sure what its called) work perfectly.

here is a picture:

i have always came here for advice so....

Pros:

- Absolutley Amazing Sound
- Beautiful EQs
- More but cant think now

Cons:

- one thing i hate that it doesnt have a VU meter for the cue and i am use to looking at lights on my old gemini 626 mixer (do you guys think i will get use to this ??)
- Also my old mixer had a crossfader for the cue-to-live so you could bring in a little bit of the live in to get that perfect beatmatch(at least thats how i was use to it) this mixer doesnt have anything like that so its really hard to tell if its too low or too loud.
-somethings wrong with the fader and channel 3 (PGM2) phono <-- which is prolly the problem

maybe someone with this mixer or the same features can give me some hints and pointers ??

also is it good to get use to this because maybe a clubs set up doesnt have the crossfader or the knob for cue & live so i have to mix completley one ear to cue and one to live ??

Thanks in advance for the help.

Check out with a sound guy whats up with the third channel. If it's gonna cost a fair bit to replace etc, I would just save for something more reliable, and not broken. Sketchy mixers often are more annoying then not...

my 2 cents

well, if the channel 3 phono input is fucked, then don't buy it. if you want to mix with turntables, then your going to need that! if it's an input fader or the crossfader that is fucked, then you can replace that. but, make sure it CAN be replaced first.

as for the cueing, yes, you will miss it. it all depends on if you can live with it or not. it's possible to figure out the volume in the headphones, you just need to have good headphones, and a good ear.

the phonos on 2 of the channels work fine , i mix on channel on 1 and 2 , keeping the fader in the middle, im thinking thats the only way to mix with 3 channels. Im not going to buy a third table, and IF the phono doesnt work on the third channel i could use it for a cd player that should be fine.

right now i have my tables connected to phono 1 and phono 2 and channel 3 nothing is going on.

i say don't bother for that price

sketchy mixers are more pain than they're worth
take the money and save up a little more if you want a new mixer
and the mixer you have should last you until you're able to get something better

I have the PMC 170A. It's in Chrome so something like this one only that has kill switches as well. I love this mixer although i must warn you something.
1: If you're planning to have a thrid deck or cd player (which you will one day!! like i am now!) and you use cross fader for mixing then this is not the mixer for you...it doesn't allow you to assign the line for using cross fader so to use it you'll have to set up your 2 decks on line 1 & line 3.
2. The chrome mixer although looks cool but need extra caring.. you leave it alone for a week or so without cleaning it then it starts t odevelop rust etc and soon your mixer isn't as sexy as it was anymore. Anyway, mixing wise this is a fine mixer.. i haven't used other mixer much but this one is fine.
