so that you could see not just how loud the overall track is, but the entire frequency range. so, if you turned down the bass on the incoming track, but left the treble up, on a regular mixer, the whole signal would appear quieter(less LEDS would light up). with this mixer, only less lights on the bass frequencies would light up, and you could tell that the high frequency was still nice and loud and clear.
It also appears you could switch it to master, in which case, i think the whole display would double in width, and you'd have twelve bands of monitoring for the master out, allowing you to see where there were holes in the sound level, leading to smoother mixes.
