Exclamation Save Someones Life

For those interested: taking a few seconds may save this woman's life.....this is an Amnesty International petition,
so it won't just disappear into cyberspace and have no effect...

AMINA LAWAL SET TO BE STONED ON 3RD JUNE

The Nigerian Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for Amina Lawal, condemned for the crime of adultery on August 19th 2002, to be buried up to her neck and stoned to death. Her death was postponed so that she could continue to nurse her baby. Execution is now set for June 3rd.

If you haven't been following this case, you might like to know that Amina's baby is regarded as the 'evidence' of her adultery. The father denied everything when he realised the trouble he was in. To find out more about sharia law, see http://www.guardian.co.uk/theissues...,777972,00.html

Amina's case is being handled by the Spanish branch of Amnesty International, which is attempting to put together enough signatures to make the Nigerian government rescind the death sentence. A similar campaign saved another Nigerian woman, Safiya, condemned in similar circumstances.

By March 4th the petition had amassed over 2,600,000 signatures.

It will only take you a few seconds to sign Amnesty's online petition. Go to the web page: http://www.amnistiaporsafiya.org/

Enter your first name in the space marked ("nombre"), and last name in("apellidos"), your county in ("provincia"), and country,(In the drop down box pick Reino Unido)(United Kingdom). (Pick whatever country you are from)

Then click on "Seguir" and go to the second page. There you have the option of entering your email address if you wish to receive follow-up information. In any case, be sure to click on "aceptar" to have your name added to the petition list.

Signed.. although I am very sceptical about petitions such as this.. I mean, influencing a foreign goverment (and such) to ignore its law, etc.

yeah, it most likely won't do a thing. I was unaware of this:

quote:
Diplomatic remedies are being sought, and maybe if a passingly plausible loophole can be found, that northern court of appeals will overturn Amina's conviction on even the flimiest of pretexts, as another did in the 2001-2002 case of Safiya Hussaini, another Nigerian woman then under sentence to be stoned to death for having committed adultery. Safiya's conviction was overturned in a Muslim appeals court in March 2002 on the grounds that her "adultery" had taken place prior to Sharia's law being enacted in her region.

Those grounds will not work for Amina, though. The judge at the appeals hearing rejected the argument that her conviction for adultery was invalid because, as her lawyers claimed, the child was born before Sharia law took effect in her area. If a loophole is to be found, it will have to be another.

before i read the snopes article. This is truly sad. I agree that you shouldn't go telling other countries how to make their laws.

However, i believe that inhumane punishment like burying a person up to their neck and stoning them to death is a horrible outrage, nobody should have to suffer that.

if you want to dissuade people from adultery, then put a bullet in her head, if you must, but stoning is inhumane and should not be condoned.

the snopes article has a good point though, this can likely only be stopped by force now, which could plunge the country into civil war, which would be much worse.

This is truly the saddest thing i have heard in a long long time.

Don't worry mate, this petition is quite old actually, I remember I saw it on the news. Nigerian authorities decided to let her live after all the comotion this sentence caused all over the world

And I agree with nic01445: there's a whole cultural difference that must be considered, although ending a human life can be highly questionable.

No maaz, this is not the old petition. the first womans name was Safiya, and her life was spared. This womans name is amina, it is not the same case.

I'm not so much opposed to the killing, i mean even the USA has the death penalty. I am opposed to the way it is carried out.

I told my fiance about this, and she is more angry about the inequality, that the woman gets stoned to death, and the man doesn't. As i understand it (i could be wrong) the man is under penalty of death by stoning as well, but there is no "evidence". the evidence against her is that she had the baby.

My question is, isn't there blood testing in Nigeria? i mean, when someones life is at stake, you'd think they could do that, being that the technology has been around since the 50s? if they could prove it was the mans child, do you think he should die as well?
