Question Is Trance music Lowest Common Denominator, or is it more?

It recently came to my attention how most popular music is made for the lowest common denominator of people in our society. Hip Hop will play the SAME beat for the entire song, with some guy syncopating ONE NOTE over the entire track. This is mainly so that media companies can passify the masses and make them identify with particular brands and images. (for those who want to know: This is from the Frankfurst school of media theory)

So my question is: Does Trance fit into this theory? Are we all listening to Trance and being pacified by its "lowest common denominator" charm?

______________

This is what I think: As far as I'm concerned, the reason why most people reject Trance is because it is NOT for the lowest common denominator. Trance works on subtleties, with small changes making a world of a difference. Although some may denounce it for the ever present 4/4 beat, look at how repetitive Hip Hop's beats are... Not even having break downs! I believe Trance offers a higher form of entertainment that does not passify the masses, but energizes them, and makes them see the detriment of other passifist types of music (among other things!) In fact, we Trance fans are a bit elitist in protecting our music from becoming "low-brow" entertainment, denouncing and boycotting anything that attempts to "sell-out". We are saved from passification of media conglomerates!

Tell me what ya think...

Music is business. Trance is beyond music. Trance is a religion. And Tiesto is our God.

I think what you wrote in that last paragraph pretty much sums it up for the whole trance community. I have always found the world of trance, and electronica in general, fascinating when it comes to this "non-hype phenomenon", as i like to call it. It's like we are all saying "TELL EVERYONE YOU CAN ABOUT TRANCE....SPREAD IT TO THE WORLD!!!!!" But then as soon as a song gets "big" (i.e. Rapture, Silence, etc) it's 'selling out' and shit like that. I understand the principle behind it, but sometimes, I just don't get it. But anyway, I understand your point...great post!!!!
