the best advice is to record your sets. listen to them very carefully after, and if you are satisfied then you are ready to hand some out. no slipping beats, no chord clashes, no bad volume jumps.

give them to friends, family, coworkers first etc. once people start really digging the mixes, and your mixing is near flawless, then start approaching club owners.

dam sounds like its gonna be like 10 more years and iam already too old!

nah, it won't be that long. i haven't even had my decks a year, and i have already made tons of progress. people are already urging me to contact the local clubs and promoters, but i don't quite feel confident enough yet, so i am going to wait a bit more.

Yeah, you don't wanna look like an idiot when you play out...
But, after a few months, you'll feel you make alot of progress. I have mine for about 6 months now, and, sometimes, my mixes are VERY smooth.
YOu should work on beatmatching alot. It's very hard to learn, but once you get the hang of it, it's no problem. You'll be working on this about a month with intense practise... That part isn't cool at all. You're gonna wish you never started, but, practise is the key to succes.. beleve me.

Hey! I just got my setup working yesterday for the first time! It's taken me a while since I had to buy the stuff in parts (b/c of the $$$ factor) anyways, just wanted to say am with you man.

Another suggestion - see if there are any local amateur DJ nights where you live.

I'm going to spin in a club for the first time tonight, at an amateur night, so it will give me a chance to adapt to playing on a club system.

The most important thing is networking and contacts. Go and hang out at your local DJ store(s) as often as you can. Talk with the guys who run the store, who work at the store, and other DJ's who come into the store and buy the same music you spin. Without networking or contacts, you'll probably never be able to land a gig anywhere since most of the time people only lend out gigs to DJ's they know or DJ's of their friends.

Also, most gigs are free, remember that. There are so many damn DJ's around that the only paid gigs you will ever be able to get are house parties or private parties. Playing in clubs or big 'raves/massives' will most likely be for free simply due to the fact that so many other talented DJ's are out there and willing to take the gig free of any charges (they just want exposure). Then there are seldomly those other DJ's who are resident of clubs or have gotten good enough to a point where they can find paid gigs (which do exist, of course). Don't look forward to making money as a DJ - that's tough luck.

good advice

networking is more important then anything else i find it easy because i like talking to the people really into the music which are mostly djs/producers/promoters anyway

make sure you have quite a few records i think too, remember if you do well at your first gig and they want you back, you dont want to go back and play a very similar set!! this is whats holding me back at the mo

i agree with u guys that networkin is the most important...but what about the ones that have no one... what do they have to do to prove them selves...
i dun want to sound lame or anything but really how fair is it out there for startin dj's when other dj's "friends" get better chances.
