Godskitchen @ The King's Hall, Belfast (21-04-03)
GODSKITCHEN @ THE KING'S HALL, BELFAST (21-04-03) - JUDGE JULES, TALL PAUL, FERGIE, MARCO V, DJ SCOTT PROJECT, GUY ORNADEL, ROBBIE NELSON.
Well it is time again for one of the best events the Irish dance scene has to offer, Godskitchen @ The Kings Hall in Belfast, so good!!!! We arrived at the venue just shortly before 5 o’clock, the queue was reasonably big.
It did not take that long to get inside the venue, we were greeted by the usual Godskitchen setup and Robbie Nelson on the decks. Robbie played a really good warm-up set, this guy again never fails to impress. The one tune that particularly stands out was Afterburn – Summer Sun, I remember Guy Ornadel played it at Lush a few weeks ago and it is only now that I have been able to ID the tune, awesome. If anyone could help with the ID of this tune Robbie Nelson_1.mpg would be most grateful, I have heard it loads of times but just cannot remember what it is called!!
The next DJ to take to the decks was Marco V. I was actually standing at the back of the venue taking a few pictures when Marco took to the decks, I virtually ran to the front for the start of his set!! I was a bit disappointed that Marco was on so early but proceeded to go nuts during his set. The first big tune that Marco played was Push-Universal Nation (Push vs. Globe 2003 Remix), I was up at the front recording the tune when I heard ‘irishclubbing, irishclubbing’ – when I turned round it was a few guys off the board, Gary_Moore and Fuz2000, great to meet you nut bags!!!!
Marco played quite a similar set to the one he played at Godskitchen at The Point although he did not drop Marco V – Del, probably because he had given the vinyl to Fuz, you lucky git!!!!! Still a great set from Marco which also included Marco V - Revolt, Marco V-Echoes (V.Ision Remix), Marco V - Atlanta 02.02.02, Coldplay - Clocks (Marco V Bootleg) and the awesome Solar Factor - No Return.
Judge Jules was first up after Marco V, the Judge has been receiving a lot of stick even from his most diehard fans and I was interested to see just how he would respond (I was just praying that he would not play his shameful Justin Timberlake mixed with Rank One – The Awakening tune, it sounded so bad in Dublin).
I have to admit that again I did not mind Judge Jules’s set, I find that the Judge has always had some great tunes in his box but his main problem is mixing which is often awful and he intermingles great tunes with dodgy remixes during his set. One tune that sticks in my mind is the new Cosmic Gate record Human Beings, this is an awesome track and luckily I was able to get a short video of it being played. Again Judge Jules played some wicked records including Cosmic Gate -Human Beings, 3 Fingers-Frozen February (Flake mix) and one of my all time favourites Svensson & Gielen - Answer The Question (Cosmic Gate Remix). All in all not a bad set from the Judge, it’s just a pity that he seems to always blame the decks when he performs a bad mix!!
Tall Paul was next to play, he started off really well and this was to continue for the rest of his set, I was really looking forward to him playing as he was really, really good at The Met a few weeks ago. Tall Paul played for around an hour and half; in his set he included Afterburn –Summer Sun and the awesome classic Storm – Storm which he also played a few weeks back at The Met. Tall Paul was surprisingly the only DJ to play Nothing But You (PvD Club Mix) during the night and I was able to get a video clip of the tune. Again another great set here by Tall Paul, he really seems to be coming into some red-hot DJ’ing form and I would definitely travel to see him spin again!
Fergie was the next DJ to spin, in the past I have not been too impressed with this guy however today he was absolutely awesome, he played some really class banging techno, which the crowd loved.
I did not know many of the tunes that he played but the set did include the awesome tracks John '00' Fleming vs. Simple minds - Belfast Trance and Phil Kieran - My House. Phil Kieran is a great new up and coming DJ from Belfast and there are rumours that he will soon be getting his own show on Radio One and an exclusive Essential Mix, good luck to Phil!!
Fergie was followed by DJ Scott Project, I have to admit that I really like Scott; he is an excellent producer however his mixes are a little dodgy on occasions. Scott Project played from around 12 o’clock to 1:45 and included his own productions DJ Scot Project - O (Overdrive), DJ Scot Project - R(The Rock) and Scott Project - Outer Space. The last DJ to play at Godskitchen was Guy Ornadel, after seeing him spin at Lush a few weeks ago I knew that this would be a banging end to an awesome event, I was not to be disappointed!! Guy started off with a brilliant remix of Faithless – Insomnia and finished off with Who Da Funk-Shinny Disco Balls (Unknown Remix). During the set he played one of my all time favourite tunes Kid Precious – Proceed, this track quite simply sends me mad every time I heard it, it is just so good. The other track, which he span, that sticks out in my mind was Scott Bond vs. Solarcoaster – Third Earth, also awesome.
All in all this was one of the best GK events I have been to yet, it comes very close to the best one (Boxing Day) that I have ever been to. A special thanks must go out to Jonas who was working with me on placement over the last 14 weeks, I hope you have a safe journey home, thanks for some great times!!!
