The State Of The Scene in Vancouver
Well,,, this is the first time I've been on-line for awhile now,,, and after reading through ALL of the local 'electronic/rave' based message boards and looking at the line-ups for upcoming parties,,, I must that I am very sad. I don't know if I can explain how I'm feeling right now,,, but I will try my best. First off,,, let me start by saying that I am deeply upset with the state of the scene in Vancouver at present,,, especially the trance scene. I know that Armin Van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk will be coming in April and Ferry Corsten soon after,,, and this is Huge,,, although I can't help but wish that these events would be held at the Comodore or the Rage and go until at least 4am. The PvD show has massive potential,,, and I hope it goes through. Other than that,,, I just don't understand the direction promoters are taking with thier choice of DJ's that they are booking,,, and by this I mean headliners AND locals. Now,,, I would like to say that there are some promoters that are really putting on quality shows such as PH-1,,, who IMO have braught the most consitant level of talent through out last year. And it's good to see that Phu and his friends are starting up some new nights as well. Yet still I still see DJ's who have been playing far longer than myself that don't get any opportunities to play out. I also see a lot of ass kissing and people begging thier way into getting booked for shows,,, and as a result it seems that everyone has become so bitter and that they only think about themselves. One of the major problems seems to be that everyone knows everyone. By this I mean unless you're friends with the promoter of the show... YOU ARE NOT GETTING BOOKED. PERIOD. Now I don't know why this still bothers me when I'm all the way in China... but it does. So unless you have your own club night or throw your own show show and can arrange some sort of cross booking.... you will NOT be getting booked either. What can we do about all of this? This is something that I have been asking myself for months,,, I wish I knew. And believe me,,, I've been trying my hardest to give people the chance to play at my night who I think deserve it most. All I have,,, is a club night in Richmond that most people in our city don't even know about. Still,,, the night is at capacity every week and my DJ's play kick ass tunes EVERY week,,, and I'm really proud of everyone who is a part of my team. But I really belive we need to start to some big things in for 2003. As much as I'd like to get things rocking,,, while trying to get my own DJ'ing career it's going to be very difficult,,, especially all the way from China. So,, I believe that we really need to work together as a team. I think there are enough people on this board which share the same passion for trance and good electronic muisc as myself that I believe we can make things better in Vancouver. Seriously,,, lets show people what real trance is,,, I know between us we have the vinyl and knowledge to do it. Let's put aside our diffrences and personal agendas and do this together.
How you ask? Hehehh. Well,,, My first idea would be a TA stage at Apex Project this year. And I'm not talking about a little popcorn fart stage,,, I mean a real stage with a kick ass headliner. I'd even like to try and get some members from other provinces in on it if possible. What do you guys think about this? I know it's a long ways away,,, it's just something that I think could work. Either way,,, let me know what you think.
I look forward to hearing any other ideas you guys might have,,, and if you took the time to read my whole post,,, thank you very much
