2x4 battle

So, I have played out muliple times, and am no stranger to putting on and playing shows. However, the 29th will be the first time I have played in a 2x4 with another DJ. What can I expect? It is not like a hiphop battle, I assume. Will we be playing off each other or what? Thanks for any info I can get, I am a bit nervous about this. Oh yes, and I just bought the Pioneer HD1000 for it, quite happy about that.

Thanks again.

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean when you say you're playing in a 2x4 with another DJ? I'm pretty confused.

2 DJs, 4 decks.

i've never played one before, i've only played back to back (2 DJs, alternating tracks, usually 2 each)

My advice is to comunicate with the other DJ. if you are spinning trance, you'll have to be careful to not let your melodies clash, as this is easy to do even with only 2 tables, let alone 4.

make sure you know when he is mixing in, and vice versa.

Wow. Sounds difficult.

This is what G&D do?? A 2X4 "battle?"

I've never really understood the meaning of "vs."

now, G&D probably do back to back i would imagine, same as sasha and digweed, deep dish etc.

2x4 is used a lot in raves for DJs that know each other well in the local scene, at least, that is how it is here.

Actually, it is very fun. You can pop out some Lovely things you hardly can't do alone. You should all try it, it's fun..

If I'm dropping in the next tune over my buddies other currently playing tune, would he have to fade the volume on the playing deck while I bring up the volume on the cue deck? The same goes for EQ, it would seem really confusing.

It depends really, there are different ways to have this setup.

the best way is with 3 mixers. One for each DJ, and one in the middle, to control the balance between them. then both DJs can access the crossfader in the middle to work between them.

Another way is with only 2 mixers, one having at least 3 channels, with the output of the first mixer being routed into a spare channel of the second. in this case the DJ with the 2 channel mixer would have to depend on the other DJ to leave the 3 channel open so he could mix in. and the DJ with the 3 channel would have to fade down the middle channel to mix out.

Yet another way is with a four channel mixer, each DJ gets two channels. this way sucks though, because, there is only one cue output, so you'd need to use a splitter to drive both headphones. and each DJ wouldn't be able to cue a seperate thing. Also, not many mixer support 4 phono inputs, DJM600 doesn't, but the DJM3000 does.

In any case, i would see if you can go ahead of time, and try the setup with the other DJ to work out any issues. If you can't do that, at least find out from the promoter how it will be set up.

Thanks for the help. I still don't really know what to expect, but I'm sure I can get the hang of it. It should be an interesting event to say the least. If anyone is in Sacramento, CA on the 29th check out the Lighthouse (shameless plug).

What's gonna be funny is that the DJ I am playing with (a buddy of mine) is all about funky house, and I like hard/epic trance. It will be a compromise...I hope.
