Your opinion on the Euro

Well its in the papers, its everywhere. Apparently Tony wants us to join asap now! Gordan brown doesnt like it and wants his 5 economic targets met. What is ur opinion?

Personnally, to me, having the pound is something that is british and something id like to remain. I dont want some european country to take control of our shit when i prefere ourselves to do it.

I really dont know allot about the euro, but i feel most people dont want it, especially after how britain has been delt with about the war (mmmm france lol).

Anyway, i say GOD SAVE THE POUND?

Opinions??

btw the uk forum seems a bit quiet lately so im just trying to open it up a little

Well we havent met the 4 economic targets which we want to meet before we join. We have met all the EU targets though.

Firstly i think that this would massively help our uk business as we would benefit from no exchange rates, so cheaper to export for us, but it is relatively more expensive to import. And we dont want to get left behind which which has already lead to foreig investment falling rapidly, so this would help our FDI.

As for us. Well it means we have to change our currency. But means we wont have to when we travel into europe. And if we did join we would have 2 years to get used to the prices, coz everything would be marked up in both, if it isnt already anyways.

If you look in most stores it is actually cheaper to purchase something in euros. Another example of us paying over the top for our products.

But i think it would benefit the economy and boost demand. Which can only be a good thing.

We dont wanna get left behind,a nd the euro is getting stronger.

But i still am a bit worried, if the euro crashes, we cant just go back to sterling. So thats my only worry.

Otherwise i dont see the problem. Although i would probably still vote NO. Coz i dont want to be run by another country. As the bank of england would no longer have power, and we wouldnt control our interest rates, and may be harder to control inflation etc.

So i would prefere to give it about another 5 years before we concider joining

I am strongly against anything to do with Britain becoming anything to do with those Europhiles in Brussels, and i'll post my reasons when i get back from work in the evening!

the euro helping our economy is a load of bollocks. to be honest our economy has not suffered one bit since the rest of europe adopted the euro.. in fact the pound has continued to get stronger!

IMO we should keep the pound forever, as it is what sets us apart from the rest of europe. we arnt part of the europe landmass so why should we have shit money thats worth only 2/3 of what our money is? we have always been in charge of our own money, and weve always had it good economically, now whats to say some brussels twat who doesnt know whats good for our country takes a wrong decision..?

then theres the fact that we lose the novelty of having foreign money when we go abroad in europe.. to be fair weve lost that anyway with them all having the euro, but its still a novelty having the euro on holiday...

bleh

as for the pills, i'd prefer hexagonal E's but euros will do just fine thx

Nope the pound is actually decreasing, exchange rates r comin down as the euro gets stronger.

And foreign investers wont want to invest in our country with fluctuating exchange rates, coz if they sell something to a eurozone country and then exchange rates fall they could loose money.

I have to keep thinkin about this stuff, our final economics exam is on europe, hehe

So we have been doin all about joining the eurozone for months now

The 5 targets are pretty vague, some economists say we've met them all for quite some time, others say we haven't. Obviously they were deliberately made so vague so that Tony and his bumchums can ultimately join when they want.

The pound decreasing is a good sign, the pound is overvalued and at current rates Europe would love us to join. However we are more interested in joining when the pound has decreased, so the signs are good.

If we can successfully converge with the Euro I say go for it, but if that doesn't happen then I don't think we should. The Euro is indeed a gamble, who knows where the Euro will stand in 20 years time, but the UK (the world's 4th largest economy) joining would certainly bolster it.

The Euro is still worht less than the pound, and although its getting stornger, it won't match its economic strength, although i'm sure a real economist like Fly will prove me wrong

Joining the Euro would be the first step for Britain to lose its identity. Has anyone vaguely followed the news about the EU becoming the United states of Europe? Basically, everything about our lifestyle would change, our economy, our identity etc. Personally i'd rather our country was run by our OWN government. Even though they might be shit, i'm sure you'd rather have them than some stuffy nose frenchman alloting our budget and stuff.

KEEP THE POUND! BACK OFF BRUSSELS

Keep the Pound. As I've said it many times before currency is like a flag it gives a country its identity. I was seriously pissed off when the Irish punt became a Euro, I'm sure many other european people were pissed off when they lost their currency, my point is where not the United European States every countries invidual and it should keep that way.

Call me a seperatist if you want and the FACT IS I AM! I'm totally against the idea of unity with countries which I think the which I think the Euro is trying to do what will happen next? will every country have just one European passport? Its fucking ricilious, One thing I love about every country in Europe is the countries are so close togther yet everyones so different in which country your in, their history, culture, lifestyle, and customs it what makes things intresting and any slight hint of unity will ruin that all.

On an Economic point what happens if a country with a shit currency joins the Euro? its still going to affect the whole currency itself. If you ask me the Germans were stupid joining the Euro because the mark was so strong. I do want my hard earned money to be worth money which would be a £ to end up being worth 75p its fucking stupid.

A combined united currency is dangerous, next thing every country will have the same passport, the same flag, then the same nationality. You may think this is bullshit but it's not immpossible with all the different languages in Euro but it can happen look back in history, at how many seprated states joined as one big state even though they had different cultures and languages, all what happened was they adopted everything from the strongest state out of them.

Look at this way everythings fine with £ maybe not everything with the politics of this country. But would you want your grandkids speaking French or Spanish as first language? would you want them ending up classed by most people in the world as terrorists because they want to fight for their freedom and live like their grandfathers before them? Because this is the sort of shit what happens when you decide to come united even in little things such as currency.

Do it, it wont hurt the economy and it'd be nice to travel around without having to worry about changing cash

You don't need a bit of metal with the queens head on to have a national identity, if that's all we've got we're fucked anyway

I agree with this, I just don't think of currency as a national symbol.

You know I'm not a big fan of the queen spad and yes not exchanging money is great. However whats the point in being the same? its fucking boring, I don't want to look at exchange rates and see $ the yen and the euro. Having the same money leads more in the direction of my idea of the United States of Europe.
