Trance Ideals

Generally when people find out that I listen to trance/prog/whetever, they always ask what type of people "we" are. There is always the "do you pop X all the time" question. But, some people are genuienly interested in finding out more about the culture, especially after having listened to the music and enjoying it. The sad thing is, I never really know how to answer them. Of course, i tell them it isn't all about drugs and raving, but I can't really explain the "euphoria" some people get from listening to trance. Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks,
DR 86

I say don't fall into their preconceptions.

Every still of music ( and I do mean just about every one out there ) has had history of being mixed with heavy drugs alcohol etc so don't fall into the trap believing that drugs are only in the electronic music scene, which I'm sure you know, but let them understand that.

Explaining the fact of joy happiness well feeling and all that ( ok description sounds retarded pardon me ) humm you can say it's just letting yourself somewhat drift away in the music.... not that I wanna sound all psycho freakky on you but I guess when I listen to the music it makes me relax and somewhat 'fly' away .... not that I want to make this sound gay or anything but you know ....

Just put people back into their spot and let them know how you feel about this and not how the movement is a whole ( well you really say what you want ) cause if you pop pills like crazy then they'll say everyone does, if you don't ... they might change their preconceptions on all of this.

Tuff issue to explain to most people seeing the average person isn't even an "individual" perse and can't understand this so called attachment we have to music.

I have learned about the history behind house, trance, drum'n'bass and techno. Always liked to know the history behind these genres, so I read some books on them and the stuff I've read about it. I always find it's fun to know the history of genres and appreciate the ppl who made music what it is today.

Now about drugs and music, it's always been mixed together by someone. I mean the whole acid house genre was remembered with the birth of clubbers taking acid in late 80's. Then again, I find it's uninformed people who make the stereotypes about the music.

Then again, during the 70's ppl always said they did heavy drugs and they did do heavy drugs. The stereotype of a hippie was correct.
