Sequence of effect devices

I am using Reason and I am wondering what is the best sequence in a chain to add effect devices:

instrument -> delay -> reverb -> EQ -> filer -> compressor -> mixer

or is a combination like

instrument -> EQ -> filter -> reverb -> delay -> compressor -> mixer

also possible (of course it is possible, but does it sound right)?

What is the ideal combination for instruments and for drums?

I think delay and reverb should be sent through a send, while a filter and then compression should be an insert.

i'll say this...eq and compression need to come at the end of the chain. i found a good look for this subject a while back...don't remember what though...do a search, but basically i think it said this...

Instr -> Filter -> Reverb -> Chorus -> Delay -> Compressor -> EQ -> Mixer

i don't know...of course things can get moved around and change the sound, but i think that this is pretty typical...also, like the others said...send is a good thing.

compression over a reverb can give some (possibly unwanted) weird fx.

Y'know, why don't you just try changing the order and see what you like the sound of? ;D

If the effects aren't quite working in a track, you can swap them around before you try tweaking each parameter to make things sound better.

I've said this before, and no doubt I'll say it again, but don't be afraid to experiment. Sometimes you can some very cool and unusual results by not following the rules or by doing something you weren't quite intending!
