Interview with Guy Ornadel

Guy Ornadel is renowned as one of the premier DJs on the UK circuit. He’s a regular on the international circuit, taking in all the top clubs across the globe. He is described as ‘one of the leading Trance DJs’. In 1997 Guy left DMC and returned to the UK where he formed Ornadel Management. As a manager, Guy looks after publishing and recording rights for Sasha, Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg and Charlie May. Time management is the key to Guy’s success, balancing his management agency and fulfilling his own passion for DJing.
I’ve met Guy several times and he always has time to stop and chat with professionals and fans alike. I had the opportunity to catch up to him recently and ask him a few questions. His responses are quite enlightening.
1. In an age where trance has become a "dirty" word, it's refreshing to see a DJ who doesn't hide away from what is trendy and maintains his roots and plays quality trance. Why do you feel that so many people bash the genre when there's so much good music that isn't formulaic in the Epic Trance sense?
I've never understood why trance became a dirty word. The clubs seem full of some very happy clubbers and as DJ nothing beats that feeling of that "hands in the air" moment from a good trance track. I sometimes wonder if some of the resentment comes from those previously Top ranking DJs that struggle to go on after say, Tiesto? As for the magazines - well they're always building something up then knocking it down - after all sensational headlines sell copies. But then again they've done this to House, Progressive and every other form of music 
2. Do you tend to play differently for a US crowd than you do for a European crowd?
I get to play longer sets in America (say 4 hours) rather than 2 in the UK. This means I can put together a lot more music. Apart from that though the goal is the same.....Euphoria.
3. What are your thoughts on producing? Have you thought of making some of your own tracks?
I've been asked this a lot. After ten years on the circuit you'd think I'd have at least made one tune by now...right? In the week I run a management company for artists. I really enjoy this especially when I'm helping out artists with contracts from labels that are clearly ripping them off. I've seen a lot of DJs who are great DJs make tunes that are horrible. I've seen some great Producers play the worst DJ sets. I don't know there's an obvious rule that makes one good at the other? Some, of course, do it very well and I really respect them for it. These days it seems more and more to be a "good" DJ you need to have made records as well. I think this is an interesting development in the transition from DJ to Artist. I'm all for the future with Djs becoming Artists and then touring as Live Act but for me only time will tell whether I can still do well just by playing good sets....
4. Who would you say are your influences in terms of DJ's?
As much as I respect may DJs, I've come to the conclusion that it's the records and clubbers rather that influence me. I still chose only records I really believe in but there's a noticeable difference between clubs that prefer Armin style Trance and Scott Project Hard Trance.
5. What venues do you currently enjoy playing at the most?
Passion in England, Inside Out in Scotland, Guvernment in Toronto, Womb in Tokyo, Cream in Ibiza....and Aria?
6. Which songs are you feeling the most right now?
Motorcycle "As The Rush Comes", Scott Bond vs. Solarstone "3rd Earth"
7. If you had a choice of one big show this year, which one would you want to be the main attraction at?
