My Cali club tour

This is why NY TA's haven't seen me for the last two weekends.

If anyone cares, here's what went down for me. Have you been to any of these places and/or events?

San Francisco

Friday, May 23 - Remedy @ DNA Lounge: great happy house, with 3-4 sets of drummers. There were computers inside, where you could go online.

Saturday, May 24 - Popsicle 5 @ Concourse Exhibition Center: an indoor rave in the city! I didn't know any of the DJ's other than the headliners, but most of the 5 floors were packed. The headliners were Thrillseekers, Art of Trance, and Agnelli & Nelson.
Too bad I had to leave early and miss them, to make my west coast DJ debut.
It was at Club Bas, where a friend spinning there let me play a few tunes. With the crowd that was there, I probably should've played cheesier stuff than what I played. The DJ booth sucked, with no monitors to top it off, but I had a blast. Too bad the place closed at 1:30 am.
I could've gone to 1015 for Jerry Bonham, but my friend's wedding was the next day, so I thought I should rest up for that, as well as the partying to done afterwards.

Sunday, May 25 - Spundae Memorial Day @ 1015: ARMIN! He played for 3 hours, followed by DJ Remy. AVB was great, but I didn't like that he played only one of his own tracks. There were 4 other floors as well.

San Diego

Wednesday, May 28 - Red C, a lounge in the Gaslamp Quarter. Nice deep house was played there.

Los Angeles

Thursday, May 29 - Ivar usually has a progressive house event on Thursdays (http://www.groovetickets.com/orders...8&imageTop.y=16) but on this night, ABC was doing some casting call ("sexiest man" search) for All My Children. So funk music was played instead and I didn't stick around long. Nice place though. That area (Hollywood) was pretty much shut down by 2 am.

Friday, May 30
1. Red @ Arena. One of my favorites. I caught an hour each of Dave Aude and Scott Bond, and both rocked.
The dancers dressed in nurse outfits. *dr00l*
They have some good stuff coming up. Check the West Coast board for details.
2. Chemistry @ Hollywood Palace. I caught the last hour, and hard trance was played on the main floor. There was also house music on the terrace, and an adjacent hip-hop room.

Saturday, May 31
1. Spundae @ Hollywood Circus - I think I liked this place the best out of all tha I visited. Uberzone was the headliner, doing breaks live. I don't know who the opening DJ was, but he was great.
One of the dancers was someone I had seen in Miami and Ibiza. I also ran into someone from way back, who I last saw 5 years ago.
2. Primal 5 Years Young @ Qtopia
This was a rave-type event that a friend was promoting, with mostly area DJ's. There were some DJ's that I recognized from SF the previous weekend.
3. Naughty by Nature @ Grand Avenue
Place was a bit ghetto, but the DJ's were good.
The club was supposed to be open 3-10 am, but it closed at 8:30 am
Maybe I should have checked out this event instead - http://www.afterhourpowerla.com/index2.htm

wow, you really made the most of your trip! I am jealous that you saw Armin. I know what you mean about him not playing his own tracks, BUT, I think that says something about the type of person he is, you know? He isn't trying to shove his stuff in our faces he is introdcuing us to everything. that's class.

I have never been to cali. I def want to check it out some time.

glad you had fun!

Here was the schedule at Popsicle 5
http://www.skillsdjworkshop.com/timeslots.html
Do you know any of the names listed there, other than the big ones?

Dammit, I looked through the schedule again last night, and I discovered that I was still there for half an hour while Thrillseekers played, but missed it. What I thought was the Thrillseekers wasn't.
You would think that they would play on the largest floor, but they didn't, and there was no identification of which room was which. I guess I couldn't distinguish between "Euro trance" and "cyber trance". So I was on the wrong floor the whole time. I think I stopped by the right place for little bit during the set, but it didn't seem to sound like him/them.
I should've looked up pics of the DJ's before heading out. Sad, so sad.

I meant to say Dick's Last Resort. Thanks for the correction.

Dick's Last Resort is definitely a unique place to eat at. The atmosphere is chaotic. Don't be surprised to be in the middle of food fights with people you don't even know. The music is too loud, the posters are obscene and vulgar, and the waitering staff is very charismatic but totally rude. At first I got turned off by the whole theme of the place (then again, I DID have a splitting headache the night I went), but I realized why it does great business: the food there is phenomonal. I've never eaten a better rack of ribs and order of mozzerella sticks than @ Dick's. If you go back to SD, make sure you stop by there.

K, I'll stop here since I sound like I'm doing a review for Zagat

SD is nice, but it's too bad there wasn't much going on on the Tuesday and Wednesday nights I was there.
It seems that 4th and B is where the big DJ's play when they're in town. But during the week, rock concerts happen there.
I also heard about Montage as being one of the few places in SD that stay open past 2 am (open til 4 am) but I didn't hear of anything happening there on those nights, and I did try to find it, but wasn't able to.

When I passed by Moose McGillycuddy's on the Tuesday night, I heard "Nothing but You" by PVD being played. Some other good tunes too when I passed by at other times. But there weren't many people there, and it didn't seem like my kind of place or crowd. A friend later told me that it's usually a meat market there.

Yup, that's the way to do it, especially when you don't know if or when you're coming back.

btw, here are the record stores I visited. Didn't feel like buying or taking time to listen though.
SF: Spundae, Esdjco, Frequency-8, Amoeba (all on Haight St)
SD: I stopped by one place in Hillcrest, but it was closed. Too bad I forget the name.
LA: Wax Records, This is Music, Beat Non Stop (all on Melrose Ave)
In LA, there's a whole bunch I didn't have a chance to see.

I was thinking about going there, but I arrived in SD late, and all the places were pretty much winding down at the time (around 11:30 pm), and hardly anyone was there. A friend took me to the Hillcrest area for dinner the following night.
Next door to Dick's is the Gaslamp Strip Club. It's not what you think though. http://www.gaslampsteak.com/
A Hustler store is a few blocks away.
