I think the melody has potential to be really cool, once you get the drums, eq, effects, arrangement down... The bass part that comes in half way is a good idea but I think some of the notes don't exactly match the scale you're working on. Other than that pretty good for a start.

I modified it slightly --more or less to emphasize the main melody. The link in the first post now links to the revised version.

A few questions:

(Im using FruityLoops 3) when my song plays, the volume on one of my channels fluxuates a great deal (snare). The velocity is uniform throughout the pattern and i cant figure out why its doing this.

What on earth does EQ/EQ'ing mean?

Thx

This isnt the correct forum, you should post it in the promotions forum.

i too thought that but i would have to disagree.

A. he is posting more specificically for help with his tune and the software he is using

B. the "promotion" forum is for just that. someone who has made something cool and wants people to hear it.

yes, there is a fine line i admit.

Sorry, I think the thread title is a bit misleading. But yea, I'm not out to spread my tune to the masses; I made the song more or less to familiarize myself with fruity loops, and the help and suggestions I would perfer to focus more on the technical side of things.

does anyone have the answers to my questions regarding "eq'ing" and the fluxuating channel volume? (two posts up)

The melody has potential, the sound really doesn't =P

I'd make the main melody have a much crisper sound, and I'd change the strings so that progression isn't as obvious as you currently have it.

i really dig that melody. the rest, not so much. i agree that the sound should be cripser though.

you know, i cant really give you a percise deffinition of eqing, but im pretty sure when you "eq" something you are changing certain frequencies and editing the wave pattern of the sample. i think? guys help me out.

all i know is that you can get great (and terrible) sounds out of mediocre samples by eqing the bajeezus out of them. look in the fx for the eq option, and connect it to the channel you want to eq. i dunno, im not a fruity expert, but thats my 2 cent.

You have a point but it's still a song/clip, other people use the promotions forum for advice on samples....hmm

lol anyhow it's hardly a big deal, ill stop clogging up the topic

I think if you look under the 'current project' folder in sample browser, you end up seeing a list of all the patterns with automations hidden in them - check there because you might find the volume change.. If not maybe its echo or a doubled up pattern or something.

EQ'ing is just changing the equalization of each instrument, so they each have their own unique sound.... At a very basic level which is all I can do so far, I pull the fader for the middle frequency to the top so it peaks out for like every instrument, and give each one a different x-position and width. That way each thing kind of sits in its own little frequency range and they clog the song less.

Eh?? Fader? Middle frequency?

Is there a good website that explains some of these terms and concepts? Sorry, I'm completely new to this.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions everyone!

Hey don't ever be sorry man - you're supposed to get better right?

Ok so I'll post this pic for a short time - its in FL Studio, where I have pulled the middle fader up, causing the line to spike as shown here. This would make the sound really middle-ish, like if you turned the bass and treble DOWN, then turned the overall volume up alot. The trick is, after you pull the fader up, to sweep the knob controlling the X (left/right) position of the spike, which will highlight different frequencies. You just give each instrument a different X location for its spike, and voila - amatuer EQ-ing.

Someone who actually knows what they're doing should post too though.
