You may wish to read the post called "Axis 9" that is up on the board now.
The DJM-500 is a good mixer and it will work well with pretty much anything, including the Axis 9s, but I would very much suggest that you get a DJM-600 if you are going to be spending that kind of cash. If you can't afford it, and you are stuck on Numark decks, then get the Axis 8s and pair it with the DJM-600. Better yet, skip the Numarks all together and get the CDJ-100s and the DJM-600 and save a bunch of cash. www.pssl.com is selling the 600 for only $100 more than the 500!! The 600 runs $980, and with your $2100 budget, you can easily get this and have a $1100 left to work with on your cd decks. This will buy you 2 cdj-100s and you'll have $500 left over, or if you save up just a little bit longer you can get the 600 with the Axis 9s that you wanted.
Remember that the largest cost of djing is by far the music. Don't skimp on your music budget!!! Do you have good headphones? If not they will run you between $80-150. What about all of the cables? They aren't too much, but I'd leave about $50 for everything you'll need. What about a case to put your equipment in, keep it level and away from dust. And are you going to get a stand, or do you have an entire desk that you can dedicate to your equipment? What about monitors and a receiver etc. There are so many expenses when you dj. Don't stretch your budget too thin so that you can afford to use your mixer and decks once you get them!

Since he is going to be spinning with cds, then it doesn't make sense to shell out cast for a mixer with any better quality than a CD can reproduce anyway.
I didn't mean to say that the 500 was a bad mixer, but I have a gripe about how the PFL (pre-fade listen) function works. The one on the 600 is so much better, IMO. I would give both a try before you buy, it may turn out that you like one over the other, which will justify which one to buy.

Agreed as far as PFL goes, but I do like the sound output on djm500 much better. Lack of the shitty sampler that the 600 has, gives the 500 better sound output(btw. which IMO neither 500 nor 600 have a good sound output)than the 600. and let's not get into last century's technology, literally that pioneer still uses, I'm referring to 16bit processor, garbage. Get new technology. i.e. with 24 bit digital processor(s), especially if you only will be using cd tables. and something with hell of a lot better sound quality output. Here are a few suggestions in order of preference IMO (again I do work for ProAudio store, just an FYI)
Allen & Heath Xone 62
Tascam X-9
Rane MP44
Numark PPD9000(to be released very shortly)
Rane Empath
Allen & Heath Xone 32
Rane TTM 56i (If you only need 2channels, this is one of the best, and would be my first choice, NIB $680.00 plus shipping and any applicable taxes.)
but if you have your mind set on pioneer's last century tehnology, then take a look at new technology Behringer DJX700, aka Pioneers worst nightmare, for about 80% less cost and more features, and yes it has 24bit digital processor.
Behringer Pro DJX700(to be released in early fall, $200.00)
Cheers...
