Harmonic (IN-KEY) mixing example: May '03 House Promo [DJ Yakov V]
Hey guys.
I've had a bunch of people from this forum ask me what "In-Key Mixing" sounds like. Amit has already heard this mix, but I thought others might be interested in hearing it as well.
The basic concept behind key mixing is that it's like writing a song that's 60 minutes long without any elements clashing with each other. You only mix tracks that are "compatible", meaning that their melodies sound good together. To find the key of a track, you have to play the piano along with the song playing at zero pitch, then write it down. I will be willing to answer any questions people have about this technique, since I think it benefits everyone -- the DJs, the music listeners, etc. It's simply easier to listen to a mix that's harmonic -- it's more musical.
Anyways, my May Promo has two parts, the first one is House/Progressive/Breaks, and the second one is more weird and funky. Since I only mix music in-key, both parts of my May promo are harmonic. If you're curious about what that sounds like, give it a listen. The second one will be posted here shortly, but in the meanwhile, here's the first:

I could use some feedback. I really hope you like this mix Both parts 1 and 2 will fit on a single CD, and cue sheets will be provided when the second part is posted online.
Awaiting your replies.
Best,
