Question Ripping mp3's from VINYL?????

Hi,
I have a bunch of rare records and mixes that i can't find anywhere on the internet, that i would like to transfer to my computer (mp3 files). does anyone know how to transfer them? do i hook it up directly from the record player or from the mixer, and where do i tap it into my computer? the microphone connection?
and do i need a special application that can do this??? THANKS!!

Here's whatcha do...

1. Hook up your turntable(s) to a mixer.
2. Get a RCA splitter, hook from output of mixer into your "Line in" or "Mic" jack on your soundcard.
3. Get a program like SoundForge to record the song.
4. Hit record on SoundForge, start playing record.
5. When record ends, save the file in soundforge to mp3(you need soundforge 5.0+ to do this).

Depending upon what type of soundcard you have, you may not have a line-in, you can still use the mic input, but the sound quality will be much lower.

hope this helps...

peace

Yeah and you could also try using a program like Cool Edit Pro to remove a lot of the hiss inherent in a lot of old records.

Thanks guys....
I haven't tried it yet, but when i do i'll let you know. Knowing me i'll never figure it out - dumber than a bag of glass! heh.

I need to buy a RCA splitter, and get a good sound application. i have a billion sound applications, but they are the bollocks of the freeware domains you download from crap sites!

Oh well.... also i've been trying to get a Null modem connection between two of my 5 computers working - i want to transmit files between the two, so i purchased a parallel (or serial) cable that runs from the back of one to the back of the other. i'll be DAMNED if its been 2 months and i STILL CANT FIGURE IT OUT! damn computer thingys!

cheers!

Yeah i brought a USB data transfer cable, that can transfer at 4-8mbps, but i haven't used it yet,
also once you have recorded your vinyl in soundforge download razor lame, its the best for mp3ing your tracks.

Remember that when you record using one of your sound progs (both SoundForge & Cool Edit Pro are good....I tend to use SoundForge more)be sure you set the sample rate to the 44,100 Hz, 16 bit stereo.
If you have both a "line in" and "mic in" ...use the line in.

Stay very far away from the mic imput. They are usually mono only so no matter what you do it will sound like ass.

Your usb input device thing is probably your only hope.

the Mic input on my laptop is stereo, and ive recorded most of my vinyls, and live sets off the radio, and the quality is not too bad, but it is difficult to get good recording levels without clipping, i would say the quality is about 80% of a normal MP3,

Can you get a line in usb device????????? this would be the shit!!!!

Double check that you have your mic gain disabled in the advanced options for recording from the mic in, it really mangles sound. Also don't worry too much about having a somewhat low recording level, you can just normalize your mp3 later on.

As for the usb audio device here is a link to one of sorts

Looks a bit fishy to me though, I couldn't say if it would sound any better than recording from your laptop input as is.

Do you know of a program that normalizes mp3's? This would be very useful!

Cheers
