Question Newb Track Selection Question

hey everybody,
I finally did it. I finally got off my lazy ass and bought myself 2 decks and a mixer from dj mart. The mixer's on backorder so my stuff wont be here for another 2-3 weeks. . but oh well. anyway, so far I've bought only 2 records. Solar stone- solarcoaster and Southern Sun-tiesto and G&D remixes. Dont worry, I dont plan on spinning only summer anthems. I'm thinking of getting "I kiss your lips" by tokyo ghetto pussy (a Happy Hardcore tune). I like the track, but I think I'm going to spin mostly trance (maybe a little hard trance). Do you think I'll ever be able to actually use this tune in a set? or will it conflict too much with the rest of my sets? Also, seeing as how I only have 2 records can anyone suggest some good tunes I could check out?

Thanks,
Paul

If I were you, I would just stick to buying trance records, seeing that your a beginner. This makes it easier to learn how to mix properly. Once you advance, then start crossing the genre barrier. This is what i did!! Good Luck!

Yea very true.... I went shopping for vinyl with a friend of mine downtown and we got onlythe best of the stuff we wantede....about 8 records in total and we went to his place and mixed all 8 of them for 5 hours straight!!!! it was crazy!! I looked at the watch, feeling hungry and I said "isn't it way past dinner time?". Oh man we went out for huge Wendy's combos after that, but those first few records you buy should be your most enjoyed music.

Ya, you should buy whatever you think sounds good. That will also help you thrue the hard times as a beginning dj. 'Cuz you will have to learn basics as beatmatching... To learn this, I think you better use tunes with a noticable beat in it. When you're more experienced, you can try uplifting tunes.
good luck

The first one's you buy should always be the best of what you like...I've been spinning on and off for 7 years, and I still keep my first 5 records in the box. Classics are the best.

buy what you like soley based on that

don't just buy records that are easy to mix... maybe a few for pacticing purposed but you won't get any better without learning to mix those difficult ones.

It was the opposite for me. In the beginning I was so excited about starting to spin taht i bought semi shit records that I don't touch now. I used to have terrible taste (bought some killer first tracks and some really shitty ones too). Still I think you should stick to the same genere so that you can practice mixing. you cant mix happy-hardcore into trance (well it's possible...but probably not for a beginner). My budy has that problem, he jsut started and he now has like 5 hip hop vinyls, 5 hard house, 2 melodic trance, a few house. none can be mixed together so he actuall cant mix sh*t!

sure they can. I mix hard house with trance all the time.. same with house. they're not that far off and structured almost the same.

i cross genres all the time
often in the same set

i'll start with some nice chillin prog house, then some funky house into some trance and build until i'm pounding the hard trance and hard house

but as a beginner you'll want to stick to mainly one genre until you have the basics down

Advice:

Try not to fall into the trap of buying for the sake of fattening up your collection, similar to what Seany_G has done.
I used to to that a bit too and now there are these utter shit rekkids i would never ever ever play out in my collection.
