Ferry Corsten...

I'm pretty new to the trance seen, but I've been lucky enough to have seen both of these incredible DJ's live: Ferry Corsten and DJ Tiesto at the Guverment in Toronto, and Ferry again at Velfarre in Tokyo. It's the time I saw Ferry at Velfarre that sets him in first place for me. It was the release party for Ferry's album 'Together' (was that a Japan only release?) and I expected him to come and take to the decks as usual. But he didn't. He came out onto the stage with no records at all. What he did have though, was a whole range of samplers, keyboards, a couple of laptops, and a live string quartet. And he 'produced' the tracks live himself. He was only on stage for maybe 30 minutes ot most, by the end of which he was dripping with sweat. He played all the melodic lines on the keyboards. He mixed and sampled all the beats in real-time. And the highlight for me was when Ligaya (Gouryella) happened, and the strings were performed by the live string quartet. It was rapture!
I don't know if this kind of DJing/performance is a standard thing or not, but for me it was the idea that trance music could also be 'performed' as well as 'spun' was very inspiring. Thank you Ferry! |
