It might have been a test pressing or a promo copy which are usually of lesser quality than official releases.

And just for the record (no pun intended), vinyl is pressed or cut - not burned.

there will be a new vinyl-recorder by Vestax very soon. But it will still be expensive (around $2000) and you'll never get the sound as good as a bought record (making good vinyl is an ART!)

That record you have might be an acetate. That's a promo out of a different material than vinyl (acetate). If you really like it, don't play it to often, these wear out fast. --> make a good mp3 backup.

damn thats alot of money! 2000 dollars! but i seems like this dude burns them! i tried to email him but now he doesnt answer because i think hes scared. I know he does burn records though! I dont know is it illegal to sell them? i pretty sure they are! []Deace

I checked with Vestax a while back and the price they were talking about wasn't $2000......it was $10,000!! and they said that "blank" vinyl would be between $7 & $10 each. How long ago did you hear that they would be $2000? Maybe they figured that they wouldn't sell many if they were $10,000 and lowered the price. They told me $10,000 about a year ago.

Also, DJ Dawn is right, if it's an acetate, it will wear out real fast. You can tell if it's an acetate by 1.) The smell. Yes, the smell. Acetate has a certain smell to it. Also, acetate is not bendable. It will break if you try and bend it. If you tap on the disk with your fingernail, it sounds very different than vinyl.If you find that you have an acetate, you should burn it on to CD or make a .wav or MP3 out of it right away (before you play it too many times). And....it you're into scratching (heaven forbid), you'll tear that sucker right up.

I'm not sure about the exact price. I read it in some techno-mag a month or two ago. I'm not really interested, so I didn't pay too much attention. I think it was something like 5 or 6000 DM, which is about 2000-2800 US $.

What I find much more interesting is a new system by some french guys. They hook up a lap-top to regular turntables. You have to put a special vinyl on each of your turntables. These are "blank", they only have digital information on them. Also, there is a little piece of hardware between the turntable and the mixer, which is also connected to the laptop. Then you assign a mp3 or wav from your laptop to each of the "vinyls" and you will be able to play in real-time. Manipulations to the record are possible as if it was real (<10ms)! This has been tried and approved by DJs like Richie Hawtin and some others I can't remember. You don't change the record when you're done, you just assign a new file. This is THE SHIT!!! You can go around and have a 3000+ song record collection on your 'puter, and will never damage or loose your expensive vinyls! And it doesn't make deejaying easier like traktor or something, cause you still do it the oldfashioned way with 2 / 3 turntables and the mixer...

Quick question - what is the point of acetate? Why not cut it onto vinyl? If vinyl lasts longer, doesn't break as easily and doesn't smell, why would you want to use acetate? Surely you need a vinyl cutter to make an acetate record anyway.

Acetate is used for a low run amount of pressings. To create the plate to press vinyl is only cost effective on larger runs. Acetate is cheaper in smaller runs. It's more of a promo thing to test the tune. The kingston vinyl cutter is gonna retail at 6000 pounds and the vestax at about 4000. They are really only going to be useful if you spend that kind of money each year pressing your own tunes. Apparently the quality is pretty good though.
