Crossfader vs. Fader?

This may be somewhat of a noob question, but I have been DJing for about a year and I have yet to determine the best way to fade songs into each other. Beatmatching is fairly flawless, but when I record and fade the songs together, sometimes it doesn't sound as "seamless" as some of the other mixes I have heard. Most of the time I have started the crossfader in the 1/4 position, and then moved it over to 1/2, and then gradually all the way over to cut in the other record. I was reading up a little more on this, and it was mentioned by some that the crossfader really is only for scratch DJs, and you should use the slider controls on the faders instead to fade the tracks into each other, leaving the crossfader at around the 1/2 position. I spin mostly trance and some hard house. What would some of you suggest? Thanks so much for any help you can give me in advance.

that is bullshit. Really, it is, tell who ever sayd this, that he's really dumb... djeezes, what kind of stupid fuck says something like that?
I use obth the fader and the volume control, sometimes, even both in the same mix. It's excellent for gradual changes...

i use both

the cross fader is good for cut mixing but smooth mixes no way.

the thing is though. every type of mixer has a different curve on the volume faders so be careful. you may be used to yours but on another one it'll be completely different.
