Fact or Fiction?
Or just noise?
| quote: | Aug. 8 (Bloomberg) -- A former United Nations weapons
inspector now working for the U.S. said he has uncovered evidence
that Iraq ordered the use of chemical weapons on U.S. troops,
though didn't have the capability or time to follow through, the
Boston Globe reported, citing unidentified defense officials.
David Kay, a top Bush administration investigator, said he
uncovered solid information through documents, interviews and
physical evidence that Saddam Hussein had ordered the Republican
Guard to launch chemical-filled shells at coalition troops, the
newspaper said, citing officials who have seen a summary of Kay's
report.
Kay said his team of 1,400 investigators haven't yet found
the weapons, suggesting that Hussein was either lying or had
ordered them hidden or destroyed, the Globe said, citing comments
made to Congress in closed testimony last week.
Some specialists are skeptical of Kay's report and argue
that he's been a longtime advocate of the idea that Iraq has
chemical weapons, the paper said. Still, U.S. officials expressed
confidence that Kay would substantiate his claims. His report
will be made public within six months, the paper said, citing
unidentified officials. |
