defrag/scandisk

Does anyone know how to unstick the 'Defragmentor' or 'Scandisk' on Windows Millenium ? There was some rumours ages ago that you shouldnt 'defragment' win 2000, but i have been able to for a year or so now, but sometimes its just gets stuck by not moving off of 2% (and takes the whole morning to sort itself out)!!

Does anyone know if there is a correction that i can try ?

it should, i got win98 but it still needs about 10 hours for the defrag/scandisk. as far as i know it should be fine, remember to turn off screen an especially screensaver when you do it and dont touch it either

hope it helps,

turn any application running in the background off...there might be some programs that connect to the internet to send packets and stuff..make sure thats off..cuz as soon as smoething is written to the hard disk, the defrag/scandisk program will reset itself. Time for defragging will dependingon how big ur disk space is. And of course, defragging takes LOTS more time than scandisk

Yeah its does work. spent all day yesterday (friday) running the scandisk, then about 5pm i defragmented it. And it worked !!! But to get it into Safe mode Press CTRL when u start the computer until the menu comes up. and you choose the third option (i think). Some computers use the CTRL key & some use the F8 key. Mine (win 2000) used the CTRL key. I usually turn off all applications as the alert saying the program "has restarted 10 times do you want 2 continue ?" comes up.

Ps, Defragging my computer took around an hour whereas the scandisk took all day (from 9am til 4pm-ish)

My RAM is 127. MB & 38 GB of Memory/Space

when a full scan disk is ran, it will individualy check every sector on the drive to make sure theres no errors, so thats why it takes so long
