Hello! Setup For Recording Vinyl?

I want to be able to record my vinyl to mp3 in good quality sound. However I still havn't been able to get the results I am after.

My current setup is a cheep turntable with a good quality stylus leading straight to two RCA inputs on my soundcard. I have just brought a 24-bit/96 KHz soundcard to try and improve things, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I guess I need some sort of a amplifier or a mixer, but I don't know whether a cheep amp will be fine, or will I need to fork out? I have never used a mixer before, because I only use vinyl for listening as I don't DJ. Most people tell me I need a pre-amp, but is this the same as a normal amplifier, or a cheeper type? Secondly does the quality of the turntable make a difference to the sound quality? I wouldn't have thought it would do as I have a good stylus, but I'm not sure.

Please let me know thoughts

Jon

what program do you use to record it?

I get amazing results using Cubase with a direct X plugin called iZotope Ozone 2. The izotope is a mastering program that gives your track some life. it is worth checking out.

I use a mixer though, I odubt that has any effect on the final product though.

I am only using Creative Wavestudio, but I thought the sound quality was determined by the sampling rate/soundcard? I have tried using some software effects on previous recordings to try and improve the quality, but they just end up making them sound unnatural or worse

Here is your big problem. You need a Phono in. It sounds like you are only running to a line in. All mixers have a phono in and converts the sound and become a regular analog signal to goto your sound card.

either buy a mixer, or get an amplifier that has a phono in and put the deck to that amp and then run it (at low volumes) to your line in. This is assuming you have no line out on the amp. otherwise run it from the deck to the amp (phono in) and run the line out on the amp to the line in on your soundcard.

You're right, I am running straight to a line in This is why I need some advice on what amplifier to buy.

I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I am thinking about getting Sony's 'TAFE570' amp for £179 from hard to find records (htfr.com) will this amp/price be good enough to get good sound quality out of my vinyls?

I am still wondering if my cheep turntable is part of the problem though. I don't want to fork out for a new amp and then find that I still get shit quality because of my turntable.

..Lastly

prolly a stupid question, but I right in thinking that an amplifier/mixer will have two RCA inputs (for the two leads at the back of my turntable) and then a phono output for a phono-phono lead which I can attach to my soundcard line in?
