Reason Percussion

Hello I have a question regarding Percussion in reason..
I just recently got my hands on reason but I seem to be having the same problem as I did in Buzz Machine... my percussion sounds like its coming out of a cats ass. I'm trying to make some hard techno which is based on percussion.. What does everyone do when setting up percussion for a track? What effects do you use on certain sounds? Basicly im using the presets and soundbank that came with reason.
Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,

Eqing and a touch reeverb should sort you problem out.

top end eq will give it a brighter, sharper feel and the reeverb will make it a touch more atmospheric.

Too much top end eq will kill your track making it either to loud or deafening and too much reeverb well will aslo kill your track so just tap these setting whilst messing on with your percussion.

hope that helped,

tezz

I think you should look for other sounds then the ones that you have. You can get samples, or sounds especially made for Reason. (In refills or so? Don't know.)

A lot of percussion is made from noise. You can also make hihats from noise. Use distortion on the kicks that you already have to get those techno kicks.

The sounds are most importand. First get good sounds, then use effects.

Yeah thats what I need! sounds are what make techno usually. Do you happen to know how to create my own instead of allways downloading poor quality ones? Also what kind of hi hat is used in techno? you can allways hear it in every track in the background but I use my hi hats and they dont sound like that..

If you want to make them yourself, you can get a dedicated drumsynth. Rebirth from Proppellerheads, the manufacter from Reason, is a good start.
It has a TR-808 and TR-909 emulation wich are both often used in house music. The hihat from the 909 is the hihat you're looking for. You can also make your own sounds in Rebirth.
A good addon would be a sample cd with percussion and drum sounds. You should get it cheap second hand. (Maybe at http://www.ebay.com)

I believe you can use Reason and Rebirth together with Rewire. Maybe you can get more info on it if you do a search on tranceaddict, or just look at http://www.proppellerheads.se

The Drumatic and the Waldorf Attack are also valuable for drumsounds, but they are VST instruments, and cannot be used in Reason.

Playing around with various compression settings can really help get some life into drum tracks, try heavily compressing the kick and the snare together, this can make drab sounds really punchy...

Drums for hard techno are the core of the track, lots of ride cymbals in the back ground and a good toms loop will help with the feel, use a couple of different snare sounds too to liven up the mix...
