i agree with all the posts above
though...
unless you're a super star dj, you're more than likely in the position where pleasing the crowd may not necessarily mean pleasing yourself. for instance, you may be a hard trance addict, but you could only get a gig playing trance. for someone like tiesto it doesnt matter, he plays melodic techtrance and people came to hear him play melodic techtrance, but in your case it sounds like you like to play more powerful stuff in a situation where you may have to tone it down.
SO, play what you like, always, thats true, develop a style, but learn to like different types of tunes. for instance, find a couple progressive tracks, downtempo tracks, techy tracks that you like and fit your style so that in situations where you're opening, closing, or sustaining a party, you have some to play in your style (respectively).
i agree prog opens great. i like tracks like Way Out West - mindicrus (g&d mix), andain - beautiful things (g&d), jxl tunes, throw in some sasha, etc. or go the more tribal house/prog route with tracks by PQM, chab, nukem.
ps- i love prog but i have to DJ hard house, latin house, dnb, even hip hop. and i'll never be a super star dj.
