Music career help.... audio engineer?. ..need advice..

Well im going into my senior year in highschool, and not being 100% sure what i wana do, ive always had the philosophy that.. "do what you like and you'll succeed"... and i obviously love music and trance and would love to produce or get into some type of production or entertainment type business with music.. or something of that type. I am considering "audio engineering".. at SAE , but I live in LA and if i wanted to move to Miami to goto school for that it would be expensive as shit with all the expenses and so forth. Is there money in audio engineering?..... it is all i have found that is close to what i like and can get me a job in the future, do you guys have any other suggestions of jobs and/or careers that might be fun/cool to get into and PAY good that has to do with music/production/entertainment/ and anything that comes to mind?.... suggestions plzz.

i like your take on the situation, but at the same time, don't get into what you like to do and automatically expect a 'good pay.'

as for what you want to do. well, there's always work to be had, otherwise, they wouldn't be offering the course, but my suggestion would be to not completely pigeonhole yourself. that is, instead of taking web design, take interactive media. instead of taking musical composition, take audio interaction or something.

be more broad, so that you can have a career in not just what you specialize in, but also something that can be tangible to your field. but naturally, don't go too far.

college is supposed to teach you how to learn before it teaches you how to be an expert in a certain field. don't forget that.

Recently I've been thinking the exact same thing. "How cool would it be to work in the audio field." I wasn't necessarily thinking about producing (since I can't write any kinda music at all) but anything else in the audio field like maybe designing or engineering high quality audio products. Right now I'm about to start my sophomore year in college with a major in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. At first I wanted to go the CS route but I've kinda changed my mind about that, or have backed away from it a bit. I don't know how far I can go at my school in the audio route but maybe if I truly want to go this route I may focus more on Electrical Engineering and then after my undergrad I'll go study somewhere focusing on audio. How cool would it be to be one of those crazy audiophiles who knows everything about audio

SAE is a fucking load of bollocks. For the ammount they charge you'd expect to come out with a fucking masters degree inthe physics of sound AND electronics....

I worked in production for around 4 years while i was a teenager, everything from concert and theatre to studio recording, and i never once had any formal training. By the time i quit to work in IT, i could tell you all about the physics of sound. I knew how every piece of equipment in the trade worked, not just how to use it. I could build my own speakers, fix broken amps. I knew about current and signal strength, electronics. I learnt to interact with musicians (which is more difficult thanit sounds). I could rig a whole PA myself in a couple of hours, and i learnt the most important lesson of all - that at the end of the day a head full of technical knowledge doesnt count for dick if you dont know how to listen.

How did i learn all this. By doing it. I started out as a roadie dragging packers and running cables. I asked people how to put it all together to si could help set up, and when its done, i asked em how to work it. Dickheads in wanker colleges cant tell you fuck that you cant read in a book. Its the guys who do it for a living that know the real secrets.
