Noob question: is progressive considered its own genre??
id like ur views on this. some kids on another message board view progressive as a type of house music. whats the common view about prog house/trance? is it just one genre or 2?

I think that it is a separated genre. But I'm not a prog-head, I just listen to prog from time to time... prog is okay
Progressive is a genre by itself, but it has sub-genres. Examples of those are progressive-trance, progressive-house, and progressive-breaks to name a few. Now, progressive has been around for a long time (yes even before Xpander) and is much more innovative than general trance. People who diss progressive are usually those who never even gave it a chance. It takes a while to make a transition from trance to progressive. Trance is more hyper and much easier on the ear of the average listener. Progressive takes time to adapt to and really requires an appreciation for production. Now I'm a fan of both good trance and good progressive, but trance proves to be more and more cheesy as time goes by and progressive is always fresh.

i think progressive is a - that you can put before most genres' names....i think it's a bit similar to "alternative" or "uplifting".....and progressive rock is a separate genre isn't it??

progressive is more a style or adjective not necessarily its own genre. trance, techno and house can all have progressive elements/beats in them..

Prog is so boring....
I hope there's never a year of prog, because I wouldn't want to sleep through a year.

Progressive, for electronic music, is just a label like tribal and acid...
... whenever it's got an ethnic feeling, it's tribal (no matter the genre)
... whenever it's based on the tb-303, it's acid (except for acid jazz)
... whenever there's a pretentious producer who forgets that all genres evolve, it's progressive j/k, but if I were you I wouldn't mind much about the difference between progressive trance and progressive house, since they're progressively becoming the same progressive thing n/k

The answer is no: progressive IS not a genre by itself, because there is progressive trance and progressive house...thus, instead of just sayin prog, it's prog trance or prog house. Prog house is not a subgenre of prog, rather it's the other way around: prog house is a subgenre of house, just like prog trance is a subgenre for trance.
