A question about Techno

I've always thought and read on sites like www.eurodancereviews.com that the style Techno is represented by: Zombie Nation, Axel Konrad, and German DJs. If you've heard the track Das Licht - Take Off, that is Techno. This is not just my opinion, the term has been officially applied to those artists. If you doubt my words I will post some official quotes.

But here on these boards when people say "techno" they post something that I would label as "obscure beats without any melody". And this style is definitely different. It's not regular beat, it's shuffled, no melody, no hooks, just... something very very obscure.

So which definition, then, is correct?

Well if you're quoting from www.eurodancereviews.com (which doesn't exist...) you're doing it all wrong

In the early 90's techno was a different form of music than what it is now. Just as trance was way different in let's say '92 than it is now. Styles evolve and get new names. That's why some people still refer to some electronic music as techno, which isn't techno (as known today) at all.

This 'definition' would be the correct one right now:

Techno isn't obscure IMO. You only have to listen to it a lot more before you can really appreciate it. That's the same with all styles I think. You don't like progressive right away nor do you like trance right away.

sorry I meant www.eurodancehits.com !

And I will definitely post some quotes from there, just so you believe me and see the term used in context. BTW, the author of the site does know his genres, and he distinguishes many different styles. He distinguishes trance from techno from progressive from Italo-Dance from NRG etc. etc., basically he just posts reviews of various albums, you'll see if you go to the site.

For example Tiesto's Nyana is labelled by him as Trance.
But DJ Dean's "Play it Hard" is Techno, according to him.
And E-Rotic is EuroDance.

BAH!

It's just because of jackasses like that guy who wrote those reviews or whatever, that kids today is calling Scooter for techno...that's just bullshit...Nothing pisses me off like when I see a commercial spot on TV saying "Absolut Dance ## - The latest of trance & techno blah blah", and then DJ Sammy and Scooter is playing in the background...

It's all fake marketing, and that's why every little brat today is calling DJ Sammy trance and Scooter for techno...

I don't really know in which genres to put them under, but it's DEFINITELY not techno, nor is it trance...

EDIT: Das Licht - Take off btw is a good old kickass hardtrance tune...

There is a banging techno set with DJ Rush at the livesetsdownload section at TranceAddict...now THAT's techno! Check it out!

OK... I understand your anger, and if you are correct then I share it with you, but this guy gets paid for reviewing various albums, so he supposedly knows his shit. In particular, genre names are highlighted in a different color, to immediately give readers an idea about the CD being reviewed.

Some quotes ( http://www.eurodancehits.com/review.html ):

DJ Networx 13: "For instance "Brainshooter" by BLUTONIUM BOY offers both galloping TECHNO, but enriched with TRANCEY riffs."

DJ Networx 15: "For some of you who likes NRG mixed with TECHNO I've got "Into Your Eyes" by ANGEL ONE."

DJ Networx 14: "Galloping TECHNO in "Nightlife" by STARSPLASH serves as a good example of type of TECHNO. TRANCE sound is represented by DJ YANNY's presents TERRAFORMER - "All Over", UNDERGROUND energized TECHNO dominates in "Hamburg Rulez" by BARBAREZ feat. MIKE SPOON. "

Note that he describes Barbarez (a DJ Dean project) as Techno. Have you ever heard "Hamburg Rulez" or "Let's Go" by Barbarez? Their style is equivalent to Das Licht.

Well I surfed around on www.eurodancehits.com and I see what you mean when you're 'confused' about the term techno.

The reviewer(s) simply give the term techno to almost every compilation. E.g. Scooter is called a techno project and Pulsedriver's album is defined as techno/trance. That's absolutely not true. Scooter in no way can be considered techno or even technoish. The way I see it is that the term techno is used as strong word/expression but it doesn't have anything to do with the genre techno.

Today's techno is represented by people like Speedy J, Chris Liebing, Adam Beyer, Ben Sims, Gaetano Parisio, Gabry Fasano etc.

The music which is reviewed at www.eurodancehits.com is often trance, hard-trance and euro-dance. I haven't seen one techno album at all.

Hope this helps out a bit

Let the music speak for itself (the ID + subgenre is on the tag)

This is techno

This is techno too

This one could be considered techno as well

Yet another techno tune

Just in case you're not sure of what techno is

As for the names: look for Adam Beyer, Chris Liberator and Jeff Mills.

its always been my view that techno began in detroit and that germans and europeans in general have taken to it very well.

however kernkraft is not techno. arseholes call this techno becasue once upon a time some group called 2 unlimited sang the lyrics in their song and anything that sounds remotely like that is reffered to as techno by clueless munkeys.

if you are looking for recent techno artists then look no further than the likes of adam beyer, chris liening, peter dundov, ben sims, justin robertson, danillo vigorito, marco carola, jeff mills and so on.

I think I know what techno is but I am curious to hear your samples, but they don't work
