Question About USB

I have a relatively old PC, and I recenctly acquired a printer that I wish to use. It connects to my PC via usb. This is strange because my PC will recognize that a new device has been added, then asks me for drivers (which I install then restart my comp) and when my system reloads, it says it found new hardware! I did this about 3 times, even downloaded the drivers from the manufacturers siteand still it says "I will not satisfy your urges for printjobs!!!!!" chaos, loathing and despondency soon ensue leaving me posting on a website for answers (*clenches fists, then types). After speaking with a friend about the situation, I came to the conclusion that my comp uses USB 1.something. I need to upgrade to usb 2.0, and I was told that this was a "driver thing, not a hardware thing" if what he says is true, where could I go for these drivers that will make my USB port work? (if this really is the problem ) Thank you for ANY help.

you can either way buy an adapter which converts usb -> printer port.

maybe USB is just fucked up. I dont know what OS youre using but go into the sytem list where it shows all of the drivers, ports, and devices. Go into the USB controller properties and make sure it is working. I find that a lot of comps are fucked up in that for some reason. Roll it back to the generic USB host controller it comes with. also make sure PnP OS is enabled in BIOS.

that might be your problem cheers

USB 1.0 vs USB 2.0 is a hardware thing. There are special PCI cars that carry 2 additional USB ports. USB 2.0 and USB 1.0 ARE compatible. If you stick a usb (got tired of pressing shift ) 2.0 device in a usb 1.0 slot it will act as a regular 1.0 device which means slover Thats the only difference between the versions. Unless the printer is new i doublt thats it has usb 2.0 (it should say so on the box and in the manual).

BTW have you actualy tried printing yet or do you just continoualy install drivers? Try printing maybe it will work

hmmm... what os are you using? try patching it (windowsupdate.microsoft.com).. will help more later.. if you post exactly whats up.. its hard to follow your first post but basically your installing the drivers then it says they aren't installed again? Are you sure you are installing them and not just hitting finished with a ? mark and having it say "unknown device".... sorry for the noob inquiration if you find that entirely degrading to ask lol..

usb2 is just faster than usb1, usb2 devices will work just fine in a usb1 port, just slower. since desktop printers dont require fast amounts of data transfer i doubt it would be a usb2 device.

try instaling the driver software with the printer unpluged, reboot, then plug in the printer.

to identify any drivers you need for your system, use http://www.hwinfo.com/ to identify your motherboard, then visit your motherboards manufracturers website and download the latest drivers for it.

after you rebooted, and the system says that it has found a new hardware, did you try to follow that guide/"wizard"?
