Question And so another computer thread...

Well I just ordered a PC and it's coming in today, would like to get feedback from the board to warn me of any problems they had with an AMD computer, comments is most appreciated. Anyway, on to the specs.

AMD Athlon XP 2400+
256MB DDR 333RAM
Maxtor 40.00 GB 7200 RPM
MSI GeForce 2 MX 400 64 MB AGP
ASUS A7N8X MotherBoard
ATX Tower Casing /w 350w Power Supply
52x CD-ROM
Microsoft XP Professional

Price: $600.00 CDN (Canadian)

I never purchased an AMD system before in my life, but I'm looking for only audio/video experience only. I would also like to know if it's a good price for the PC and if I'm not getting ripped, any issues with warranty or the performance of an AMD system, please let me know. Thanks.

*Note* I wasn't looking for some really crazy computer with the latest high-tek shit, just something that can play my games and run audio at a fairly nice speed.

The only thing that could be better is the graphics card, its one of yesterdays graphics cards really, and although it will play the games, you will have to have a lower resolution etc.

If you have brought the parts seperatly take care when fiting the heatsink, its a simple process but care is needed.

As to the price I cant really comment as i dont have the time to work out the conversion rate!

Is that a typo? That is very old hardware compared to the rest of the components that you've got. Also, if you want something for gaming/visual, the GeForce2 MX is really below standard. If you'd like something cheap and good for value, go for ATI Raedon 9200 cards - good screen/image quality [400Mhz RAMDAC, the GF2MX is only 300Mhz] and defintely much better performance.

i would go for the ati 8500 or geforce4 ti4200. it is much better deal and offer better perfomance that that ancient video card. these are good for casual gaming not hardcore and will handle future games much better

Maxtor is the worst hard drive you can possibly buy. Expect it to fail at some point and back up regularly.

I was net admin for fastest growing tech consulting firm in west coast history, and in the biz maxtors are legendary for their failure rate.

i thought the harddrives with the highest failure rate were the ibm deathstars. i have a maxtor for ages and it is fine. my other 120 gig and 200 gig are doing just fine.

Ive had maxtors that last forever too. I have had a high % of them fail though. most users probably wont experience problems, but they are kind of shoddy HDs, and they have that risk associated with them

Heheh...
GF2MX was already a low-budget card when I bought it over 2 years ago.

Then again, I don't really play any games so it doesn't bother me.

Thanks again guys, I know the video card is the worst, but I don't feel like spending some more cash on something that doesn't really mean alot to me. Thanks again guys, and oh about the Maxtor, it's a legendary 'failure'? Umm someone elaborate I am very paranoid when it comes to space.

Ive had my maxtor for 6 months and had no problems, my dads had his for a year and no problems.

for any harddrive, make sure you make regular backups, and for important work/college/school documents email them to a hotmail or yahoo mail account.

harddrives from new will come with some form of warenty with them as well.

Maxtors were unreliable 3 years ago... for a while now, they've been considered some of the best.

Not sure what chipset that ASUS board is, but stay the HELL AWAY FROM VIA!!!!!!!
MAJOR problems with the IDE controllers on VIA boards. Some hard drives have trouble using UDMA66, so they must be on UDMA33 or PCIO mode. Lots of other issues too, play safe and don't buy VIA.

I've had a LOT of problems with the 7200 40 gig Maxtor. But then again, it might just be my CRAPPY VIA IDE CONTROLLER.
