performing live ... electronic music

Hello! Later this year i will perform live for the first time, and there are some things i have to find out before that..

This may be a little strange question..here we go:
Do any of you have any tips on how to perform electronic music live?
This is not trance or dance (so why do i write this here..) its a synthpop concert and there will be breaks between the songs.

How can i do starting/syncing/timing, what should i play *live* and what should i use on playback...should i have a sequencer? I do only have a PC sequencer and i would hate to run a Windows computer on the gig =)
But if i make a CD for playback, and just play the leads, I have NO possibility to control the levels for the other instruments.
I do not have tons of equipment, just two synths, some effect processors and wav-rendered drumtracks...

What would be the best thing to do in this case? Use the computer live anyway? Whats your experiences folks? I have no idea on how electronic-artists perform live at all.

Any ideas?

Well my friend you are venchuring in some uncharted territories.....Playing Electronic Music live is risky at best....(that's why we have Dj's)spinning the good ol reliable vinyl. Run the risk of computer crashing, (not to mention if it is outdoors there is the risk of rain), samplers freezing and so on.... The only group I have seen perform live Electronic music (pure Electronic IE: coming from the studio equipment is the Chemical Brother)...I seen it on T.V, not live in person...(I'm from Canada so Europe could be a whole different ball game). They had all there studio equpment on stage and were doing live remixes, it was an a amazing set, they played for about 8 hours straight....no recordings of it though cause they banned all recording material at the place... Anyway, my point here is that they had all the sequencers, samplers, drum machines, effects pedals and so on all on stage..it was huge...you couldn't even see them with all the equipment around them, and they said on the program they had a backup of everything on stage incase something goes wrong with one of the machines....(concidering this was all hardware, no software sequencers or synths) .... It was a huge opersation, and you could tell took alot of time to set up and make sure everything worked great....So unless you have about 50,000 dollars worth of studio equipment then I would suggest maybe burning on a CD or pressing on a vinyl and DJ your music and mix it up

It is a rather difficult question to answer. Everything depends on the number of persons who will help you to prepare everything and where you will play. For ex, my last liveset @ SUNZ dance dept in Ekaterinburg was @ a small club, so irt took about 30 minutes to make everything work and start with the soundcheck. But if it's a big perfgormance, you have to ask someone else to listen to the sound you tuned etc.
Greetings,
CJ Slater

Re: performing live ... electronic music

I have seen BT, Hybrid, and a local group called TRS-80 live, and here's my advice. All of them used computers in their sets, so its just fine to do that, but they mainly used tons of synths, as well as a beatbox and lots of crazy gadgets. If you are mainly using a PC for most of the sounds and that's most of what's on the stage, the audience won't take it as seriously. Make sure there's a balance.

IMO, I would not use a CD, since that's faking it - you're gonna have to eventually to learn to deal with the crowd and pressure, don't put it off by hiding behind a CD. TRS-80 did seperate songs like you did, don't worry about it - it works fine. Just play it calm, cool and collected and it will work out great.

Good luck.
