I'd also suggest getting a compressor. The very first mix I tried recording, I didn't know the importance of one, and I kept bringing in tracks louder or softer than the previous one. The compressor helps you by limiting the signal going into the computer so once you get to a certain volume, it's impossible to get any louder. So, if you set your mixer higher than this level, you can max out the volumes and it still can only get as loud as the track previously playing. They're usually less than $100 at any music store and it will make you sound a hell of a lot better!
