yeha thats what I do too sorta...I make sure that the track Im mixing out of has it's mids higher than the mids on the incoming track..that way it'll still give the track some substance and not sound like it's just being drained out with channel faders.
Treble is very important, as regulating the level of highs is crucial especially in trance where the melody can be dampened or sharpened with high EQs.
Also, try cutting everything out EXCEPT for your high EQ, and have it on 100%...kinda creates a static, white noise filter effect(At least IMO)
