Total Recorder workshop

Tach auch,

ich habe den Workshop hier für ein anderes Forum geschrieben und dachte ich share das mit Euch, da es den ein oder anderen auch interessieren könnte. Ihr müsst allerdings des Englischen mächtig sein. Viel Spass.

TOTAL RECORDER WORKSHOP V1.0

It´s time for a new introduction to a program which is pretty useful to record sets from the internet or from other sources like cable radio or any other medium you can connect to the line in plug of your soundcard.

1. Requirements

You can buy Total Recorder here: http://www.highcriteria.com/ for only $11.95. That´s a fair price for the features this program has.

- You can record any source from line in of your soundcard or record “what you hear” (for streams)

- You can record in wav or use an external encoder like lame to record in mp3 with various bitrates to match to the source you record.

- You can do schedules and let Total Recorder start and end at the time you choose and it can connect to any websites/stream links you choose.

- You can set the name of the recording and the length of the sets you wanna record. Total Recorder can save a file and record further in real time with no problems so you can record your sets in a CD-burning friendly length.

2. Installation and setup

After the installation of Total Recorder, you can look for the lame encoder here if you don´t already use it in other applications: http://lame.sourceforge.net/links.html

Now open Total Recorder. First go to Recording source and parameters.

I set it to sound board and switched it to my soundcard and I have chosen “What you hear” to record a stream that´s played in the background in real time. If I would like to record from the line in of my soundcard i would switch to "Analog mix line". (this could be called different for you as Total recorder uses the german decriptions of my soundcard)

Under "Change" you can choose in what quality the record will be done. Choose it appropriate to the source quality of the broadcast because it makes no sense to record a 128k stream in a 320k resolution as this will not affect on or improve the sound.

Now go to the menu bar and choose “Settings” under the menu point “Options”. You can set a directory where the files get stored under the menu point "Open/Save".

Under the menu point “Split” you can set the filename for your recording clicking on “Rules”

Under the menu point "Split" then choosing "Conditions"

you can tell the program either to save after a certain time or reaching a certain file size

Go to the menu point “Algorithm” and set it to use the Total Recorder algorithms.

Under “MP3” you can tell Total Recorder to use the lame encoder for the recordings. You have to point Total Recorder to the folder where the file “lame_enc.dll” is stored on your hard drive. Choose high quality for the recordings and you can set what your tag should look like by clicking on "Change".

Ok enough settings done, now for the interesting part.....

3. Basic recordings

You are tuned into an internet stream and you can record by simply pressing this button in the main window of Total Recorder.

After you stopped the recording it will be saved in the directory you have chosen like i told above.

4. Scheduled recordings

Most of the time the problem with streams from all over the world is that you don´t have the time when they air or you sleep or work. In Total Recorder you can schedule a recording so if your PC is on, Total Recorder does it for you automatically while you sleep or work.

Go to the menu bar, choose “Options” and then point to “Schedule”. You can do a new schedule here:

You can set it to “once” to do a simple one-time schedule and set the date, the start and end time or you can program a weekly or daily recording schedule like you know it from your VCR recorders. This option is awesome for weekly radio shows. You can split the recording using the rules you set as described above and give it a unique name as well.

Under “Connection” you can tell Total Recorder to use your default connection and to disconnect or not to disconnect after the broadcast is finished.

Under “Tune” you can tell Total Recorder where to connect to:

You can enter the adress, the name, the base page and the stream link you would use it with winamp or other playback programs. Now Total Recorder can record radio station XYZ at the time you want it with the name you like, in the mp3 resolution you want it and the set length you have chosen. Enjoy ripping and listening to great choons again and again and buy the tracks if you liked them. :!:

Cheers

Tom
