On Sharing Secrets

Tiger Woods practices most of his natural born life to develop his swing. I read about it in Golf Magazine, he tells me precisely what he does. I get on hole one. I shank it.

We sit here at our desks tweaking for seven straight hours, we discover something unique, a "secret" if you will. I tell someone else this, they can duplicate in under a minute what just took us half a day or in some cases months to learn.

Having said that, what are your opinions on sharing secrets? It seems to be a fine balance. Seems like a good question.

as for sharing secrets I'm a bit split up...I love to help people that are new to the thing or that just need a little extra help but in order to get your "own sound" you just can't share everything you know

but of course you must share a little knowledge but maybe not all...I mean if no one shared at all then we would all had a pretty hard time learning wouldn't we?

If I got it from someone else or if I read it somewhere, or if i just stumbled across it, then I'm happy to share it, but if its something i spent ages trying to figure out, i may keep it to myself. Not much of that though.

Personally, I'm all up for sharing. So much so, in fact, that I'll tell you how to make a gouryella bassline!

XOoO

X = kick
O = bass low
o = bass high (up an octave)

Simply, ain't it? Hope that helps you out.

In my case (newbie here) I hate ppl that give you the "no you must learn on your own because if I teach you you will get part of my style you need to get your own" to me that is just selfish, I can share, but I don't like teaching, and if it took 7 ours to get something, you've got the upper hand when sharing something, you have the experience of the creation of such thing, for example if you did a preset on 3osc you know what little or big changes you need to create a totaly different sound, mean while the guy you gave the preset just knows the preset nothing else...

I used to get mad when ppl would not tell me how recreate a certein sound a big name producer uses. But ever since I've gotten better at recreating I don't get mad. I think people should learn by experimenting, because it will make you better at creating your on sounds later on.

True but sometimes teling you how to make it or giving you a preset won't hurt you much

The only reasoning I can see behind not sharing something is if you come up with something truly UNIQUE. I'd say that's pretty rarely the case and most times you're just trying to imitate something a big producer has already done (like a layered bassline, or lush lead synth).

I think we could all benefit from seeing the way some of the more standard sounds are constructed, and as a result of that I'm all for sharing things that I learn the hard way.

I know exactly what these people are doing and I'll call them on it:

They think that if they share secrets, that somehow they themselves will be less marketable as a producer. This is to imagine that the very newbie you help with one of your tips is somehow going to become a great musician, become signed, and then take the LAST AVAILABLE SLOT of DJ at the LAST RECORD LABEL. This sounds kind of ridiculous, but I felt the same way when I was in highschool - I'd write a rock song, and then instead of being happy about how cool it was, I'd instead get jealous and upset that one of my friends also wrote a song that was halfway decent. Thats just childish though.

People just need to realize that theres room enough for all of us. If everyone become an elite producer from better information sharing, we're still not all going to make it. More importantly, just because some people you shared secrets with get signed means in no way that you're any less of a producer, will have any less record label market for you, or will do anything but actually HELP you in the long run. Just imagine how much better YOU would be, if everyone you ever asked for a tip would give it out. Just imagine.

This of course like has been said, doesn't apply to a truly unique sound but GET REAL thats 1 in a million nowadays.

EDIT: Oh yeah and as far as Americans are concerned - DAMN people, America hasn't even really caught ON to trance yet, theres nothing you could do but help the trance situation here by sharing secrets.

End of Line.
