Can someone tell me what happened to him?? don't get me wrong, he is still one of my favorite DJs it is just that his sets have a "It's all been done before" feel to them...

I remember how Magik 5 took me on a journey.. It is probably the one thing I regret erasing from my HD. The Forbidden Paradise 9. All his sets, before Summerbreeze and Magik 6 were Amazing... And now I am faced with listening to Magik 7...

The first thing I hear is that it doesn't sit well with me.. It just sounds way to familiar...

Does anyone else share this sentiment...

i agree... tiesto's stuff has gotten kind of stale recently... maybe its too much touring?

I think the problem here is that Tiesto is not playing as much Epic Trance, and he's playing a bit more progressive...Do you reckon that's it?

Of course its familiar. When you listen to all the mp3's of the live sets he's done...you recognize the songs. The question is, is should a DJ plan his set assuming it'll be up on the net the next day. He plays a group of his favorite songs that he knows the crowd will enjoy. Should he completely change his set list when he plays on the other side of the world just to please the people who have already seen him and plan to get the mp3.

I might not completely agree with it, but he needs to be cut a little slack. Think of him as a preformer...or like a band...if you will. When a band tours they usually play a strict set list...no one ever complains about that.

To sum it up, he plays what he knows, he plays what he likes, and he plays for the people who are there listening to him...he doesnt play for live mp3's that apear on the net a day or two after he preforms.

I guess I am expecting "new" surprises or sometimes old ones packaged differently...

If I treat a DJ as a performer and expect the same set over and oever again no matter where he goes then what does that say about him? Where's his creativity - isn't that a part of being a DJ.. being able to read a crowd and take them on a journey.. not just deliver something that - ya the crowd wants because they heard it on Magik or Summerbreeze - but instead maybe play stuff from the official releases with a little bit of "additional" stuff....

hmmm. maybe my expectations are too high....

I agree with D-Syde. Maybe you guys are just listening to him too much. If you download and listen to everyone single one of his sets, week after week, month after month, of course he'll get stale. Try taking a break from him for a while.

He's been talking with Oakenfold a little, I think... I remember seeing Oakenfold in the booth with him when I saw a set a few months ago, and he's been spinning some Perfecto tunes (Muse - New Born, Jan Johnson - Flesh (3 years old mix))... He's been around the King of Repetition.

Listen to Tiesto's sets every month last year - he consistantly was changing. Now, he's declining a little. I don't think he's lost it, but he can do so much better... it doesn't have that much to do with us...

You say Magik 5 took you on a journey....now would it still have the same effect if mp3's were as popular then as they are now. Do you think he put that set together just for Magik 5. I dont think so. I bet he played that set (or parts of that set) everywhere...but when it came out it wasnt stale. Thats because no one heard it a million times on mp3's.

I agree with a DJ having to be creative and having to read the crowd. I will admit he does need a little more creativity and variety...but the majority of the crowd listening to him live loves it. He plays what the crowd likes, and DEFFINETLY knows how to work the crowd...anyone would see this if they saw him live.

tunes, djs, clubs, the same principal applies for them all, if you experience it too much it seems to get worse when in actual fact it hasn't changed at all. its like when you go to clubs, talk to the older people there and they tell you, "its not like it used to be". i can't say ive really noticed a drop in tiesto's performance because i havn't been listening to him for a long time, so maybe you are right?! like haiku said, take a break for a while and you'll appreciate him more when you here him the next time.

i was just about to say the same! i totally agree!

although i do download all the new tiesto sets... i dont really give them as much of a listen... i got too much other trance to listen to... but i downloaded magik 7, burned it, and i was sick of listening to it in my car after a day! not a whole lot of stuff gets boring so fast for me

I think the OP was talking about the style of Tiesto changing as well. Tiesto has definately gotten more progressive and harder. I like his newer style, it's more edgier and slightly more risky than playing the same old type of sound month after month and year after year. Of course, Tiesto's playlist selection isn't as new, progressive and risky as other DJs that push the envelope (commonly cited example, Digweed).
I listen to an interview with Tiesto a few months ago when he was in LA to record Magik 7 and he said that for every set he would cater how "hard" or "soft" the records he would play was according to his feel for the crowd and their reaction. So in LA, I'm not surprised that it is harder than something he would play in Amsterdam. For the record, I like Old Tiesto and New Tiesto, they're both great.
