A new friend of mine introduced me to the world of IDM, and some of it totally blew me away! I'd like to hear more, and unfortunately I wasn't able to get the names of any of the tracks he played me. If anyone could offer me some suggestions on some great IDM tunes, I would greatly appreciate it.

the masters of IDM that I like are by far Autechre and Amon Tobin, these guys are geniuses.
also check out some cool drill & bass like Squarepusher and Boards of Canada, it's somewhat related.

Aphex twin is the best of the genre in my opinion . I agree that autechre and boards of canade are also very good. I especially like squarepusher with his drum n bassy idm style.

IDM == Intelligent Dance Music, not exactly the best acronym for the genre.

the thing with Aphex Twin is that he's beyond IDM, he's way too varied to be classified there, although he does have some great IDM.
IDM is somewhat related to dnb. Squarepusher and Boards of Canada is considered more experimental dnb or drill and bass, but it's roots are IDM.

So what should I look for in an IDM tune to know that it is in fact an IDM tune.

Eh? Amon Tobin? I read his name, I think he's coming over soon. Ma
edit: OH fuc, I just saw he's coming tonight, and I already drove back to my home town and away from Uni.
OH well, thank God the Viennese scene concerning these styles is so strong, artists like him are lekely to come again and again.

he's amazing. but it's not clubby or dancefloor music at all. it's more for chilling out and enjoying weird sounds

Good stuff. I love IDM. Coil is another really good band, that is kinda like the evil uncle that no one talks to. Coil is perfect music for listening to in the dark and scaring the shit out of yourself right before you go to sleep. I LOVE it
