I am new to trance so I was hoping can anyone describe to me the different sub-genre of trance (eg GOA, Up-lifting, Classic etc.)and please qoute some examples??

Since I'm So much too hardddd..section I'll explain the Harrrddd section aka Hardtrance.. Theres alot of misunderstanding in Hardtrance..maybe in all subgenres.. heh heh..

Firstly Old School Hardtrance (mellowtrance, Speedytrance, Acidhardtrance). If you get a chance to hear it due to its "rareness" Many people not really into it, O.S. Hardtrance is somewhat cross between UK Hardhouse and Psychedelic Trance. It has different elements from Acid 303 to Psyche Sounds and sometimes very tough bassdrums

Ok Next iS Nu-Skool Hardtrance..What is it? Many Groups "made-up styles" examples: Melodic=[Dumonde, Rom & Comix, Cosmic Gate, Cyrus & The Joker, Flutlicht & DJ Natron, Dave 202] Acidic,X-Tremehard=[DJ Scot Project, Derb, Arome, KaiTracid, Hennes & Cold, Hypetraxx] Awesome=[Vectrex, DJ Mind X, Dogma, Endymion, Tommy Pulse] MellowDubz=[Mellow Trax, Push, Yves Deruyter, DJ Mellow-D, Moon Project]...etc
Do Ya Get my Point? Alot of artist change their style from old-skool to nu-skool, examples: Yanny & Gollum, DJ Lee, Pulsedriver & Gary D. Another...Very.... simple explanation.. Its New, Its Hot and its Hard..well hard melody, hardbassdrum, hardbasslines i suppose.
It is ofthen Mistaken as NuSchool Hardhouse or Hardstyle which does not belong to Genre T.R.A.N.C.E.

thanx. but I am not really into hard trance and psyh. I have heard some of the stuff that u listed and basically its not me. I prefer more melodic, instrumental, uplifting stuff. eg Ein Schoner Tag (Kaycee Mix). I am just confused as to wat is wat. There seems to be a lot of different genres. Read a couple of threads regarding this.

Ok bud, there are 2 main types of trance as far as I'm concerned... these 2 main types then can split into other subgenres... but don't get caught up in all that, it's confusing. So you know, BPM = Beats Per Minute, which tells you the speed of the track, higher BPM = faster song.

Uplifting Trance ::
Songs with big breakdowns... a long pause followed by a very energetic buildup and at the climax all the elements of the song come in... main part being a strong bass and a distinct melody. Uplifting tends to use synthesizers which are the main "emotion-builders" in uplifting tracks with synthesizers. Uplifting has been referred to as Classic/Anthemic/Epic trance etc, these are one in the same. Uplifting trance ranges in BPM from 134 - 142, it CAN be higher or lower and still be considered uplifting, these are general terms. Good examples:

System F - Out of the Blue
Rank 1 - Airwave
Iio - Rapture (Armin van Buuren Remix)
Delerium - Silence (Dj Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise Remix)
ATB - In Love with the Dj

Progressive Trance ::
These tunes are generally more repetitive and monotonous than uplifting trance. They add sounds here and there as the track progresses... but there's no long pauses or intense buildups. Progressive builds an atmosphere... Uplifting builds emotion, generally. Progressive is usually at a LOWER BPM than Uplifting trance, ranging all the way from 123 up to 135, you will rarely if ever see a progressive track at 140 BPM. Good examples:

Sattva - Echo of Silence (Way out West Remix)
PQM - You are Sleeping (PQM meets Luke Chable Dub)
Jase from Outta Space - Do What you Want (Infusion Remix)
James Holden - I have put out the Light
Sasha - Xpander

Those are the 2 main categories from which all other stuff branches out and mixes with other genres. Uplifting tends to build more energy in crowds, progressive keeps a constant groove so to speak... when people say MELODIC trance they basically mean a song with a distinct melody, but the song itself can be uplifting or progressive. Then you have the different branches... Hardtrance by artists like Dumonde and Alphazone... tech-trance by people like Mauro Picotto and Scot Project... goa and psytrance which have very spacey type sounds and very trippy, relaxing and usually at lower BPMs in the 120 range. With artists like Infected Mushroom and Astral Projection, Although it doesn't seem to be very popular any more (compared to prog and uplifting).

Then of course there are songs that don't fit well into any one genre, they are a mix of trance/house or trance/techno or progressive/house. But don't limit yourself to one specific genre, all electronica music types fit well when mixed together. Welcome and enjoy.

as any ta will tell you, dont touch the stuff, it just isnt worth the bother, get some tiesto down ya and start from there

dj sammy is euro-dance i think, he desrves to die for crimes against the trance community.

Ibiza...thanks for the breakdown for us n00bs..that helps a little. Its an intimidating and daunting genre of music to become involved in.
Now...you all have to realize that its the melodic, uplifting and (gulp) cheesey stuff by DJ Sammy et al that brings people into the realm of Trance in the beginning. The remixed mainstream stuff that brings in the n00bs and then hooks them. They have their place...even though you hate to think so.
Now...here's asking for trouble but... what is the difference between Techno and Trance. I mean technically. Is it the instruments? The presentation? The artists? What key elements seperate the two?

Don't hesitate to ask man, shit that's what these forums are about... getting information. Ok Techno and Trance... I really hate people that stereotype all electronica as TECHNO just cuz of that 4/4 beat. But it gets more frustrating thinking of explaining the whole difference to them... I can't bother to explain the difference of trance/techno to people that talk shit about it ya know? It's all good for a fellow TA though

Generally, Techno is MUCH more "aggressive" style of music and much more repetitive... you've heard techno you just don't know it. Techno sounds like machines making noise that are pissed off, but to a beat of course. The BPM is also generally higher than trance songs... 138 and above bpm usually. There are some techno songs out there that I enjoy, for example, Tiesto starts with Techno at the beginning of his CD Nyana. There are alot of Techno listeners on these boards, I'm not bashing Techno, I just don't like it that much, too repetitive for me. It seems as if most people like it cuz it's aggressive.

If you want to hear Techno check out tracks by Adam Beyer...

that's a great example...

If you like Techno just make a thread asking which Techno tracks are good.

From my understanding, progressive trance has evolved due to audience demands of less breaks... they simply want to dance more and dont like standing around for 3 or 4 breaks per song.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Remember, Progressive is used for different situations and at different times... if you go see a DJ spin and he spins 3 hours of uplifting, you will get very bored from all the ups and downs the whole night. Progressive and uplifting need to go hand in hand in sets if you ask me. Check out Gabriel & Dresden... they have a unique blend of Progressive and uplifting in almost all of their songs... check out

That's a theory that might be true... hard to tell why progressive trance evolved. But a pure 100% progressive set can be boring as fuck, and a 100% uplifting set can leave you tired and burnt out. It's a mix of electronica genres that will keep your audience entertained. I'll go as far as adding techno and breakbeat, which by themselves might not be appealing to some people, but mixed in a set, it can give a very unique and creative energy to the night.
