Once you complete the sign up process by going to http://www.digitalyouth.ca/signup.cfm you will be contacted VIA e-mail letting you know whether or not you have been approved for one of the $0 phones. Once you are approved, you will be notified as to when and where you can pick up your phone. All phones are to be picked up at our DY store . Your parent or guardian will have to come with you to pick up your phone, as there will be a Terms of Usage and Conditions form that both you and your parent/guardian will need to sign. This is not a contract, just an acceptable use policy. We are going to be handing out the phones at the store according to which School you attend. Example: All Students from Clayton Heights would be able to pick up their phone on a certain date - for example Saturday October 26th. Again this is just an example.

Why is the phone $0? What's the catch?
With the escalation of Schoolyard violence and other serious issues like bullying, we have been able to get corporate sponsors to help us provide support for all students. Our corporate sponsors have agreed to provide the cell phone at no charge and to provide low cost prepaid airtime. Access to the kids help phone line is always free. Along with the $0 phone and low cost airtime, you will be able to opt-in to receive free coupons and special offers from our local and national sponsors. You will also receive a free bi-monthly publication, the Digital Youth (DY) Magazine. The magazine will be written with input from students for students. Our goal is get youth involved in issues that matter to them and their environment. (Text messaging and Airtime costs will be announced shortly. Please watch your mail and check back to the digitalyouth.ca site often for updates.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which network is providing the cell phone service?
The Digital Youth Network currently works with FIDO.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How is this going to stop crime / bullying / etc?
We know that there is no quick fix solution to the negative issues that children face daily. We simply are trying to provide a communication system that allows you to talk to someone when you have a situation where there is no other support to help you through your ordeal. In addition to this your parents will be able to send you free text messages from the digitalyouth.ca Web site.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How does a pre-paid plan work?
Stay in control of your mobile communication costs with the Digital Youth prepaid service. Talk as much as you like and refill your account with airtime whenever you need to. Even long-distance calls are affordable! Digital Youth Network Pre-paid service includes the following: - Standard voice messaging and Call Display included - No contract to sign - No credit check - No minimum monthly fee (Text messaging and Airtime costs will be announced shortly. Please watch your mail and check back to the digitalyouth.ca site often for updates.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is Text Messaging?
Text Messaging allows you to exchange text messages with almost anyone in Canada who has a digital handset. It's a fast, simple and discreet way of staying in touch. (Text messaging and Airtime costs will be announced shortly. Please watch your mail and check back to the digitalyouth.ca site often for updates.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who can I send a text message to?
You can send a text message to any other Digital Youth subscriber and almost anyone in Canada who has a digital handset.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is ICMS?
ICMS, or Inter-Carrier Messaging Service, is a group initiative by Canada's four wireless operators, Fido, Bell Mobility, Rogers/AT&T Wireless and Telus Mobility, to offer text message delivery between their customers. This means that Digital Youth Members can now exchange (send and receive) messages with customers of all four operators. These four wireless operators officially launched ICMS on April 2, 2002.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How does it work?
Each wireless operator's network is based on a different (digital) technology:
Digital Youth uses GSM (Global System for Mobile communications).
Fido uses GSM (Global System for Mobile communications).
Rogers/AT&T Wireless uses TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and GSM.
Telus Mobility and Bell Mobility both use CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), with Telus Mobility also offering iDEN (Integrated Dispatch Enhanced Network) technology under the "Mike" brand name.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What can I send to customers of other operators?
You can send text messages that have the same format as those you send to other Digital Youth Members. Depending on the wireless operator, certain accented characters may not be recognized by the network and would appear as an equivalent character.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can I reply to a message or forward a message I've received?
Yes, although you will be unable to send messages if you've reached your storage capacity. You can usually store up to 24 messages at any given time. Some handsets are able to store more than 24 messages.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How long can a text message be?
Digital Youth Members can send and receive messages of up to 160 characters on any handset. On some cell phone models, messages can have up to 459 characters.
With Rogers/AT&T Wireless, the limit is 160 characters.
With Bell Mobility, the limit is 150 characters.
With Telus Mobility, the limit is 110 characters for sent messages and 254 characters for received messages. So, suppose a Digital Youth Member sends a message with 160 characters to a Bell Mobility customer. The text message will be divided into two messages: the first will contain 150 characters, and the second will contain the remaining 10 characters. This ensures that no characters are lost. With Telus Mobility however, customers can receive messages with a maximum of 254 characters; any additional characters will not be delivered in a separate message.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How will I know if a message has been delivered?
Depending on which handset you have, you may be able to request a delivery receipt for messages that you send to other Digital Youth Members. This receipt notifies you when the message has been delivered or if it is undeliverable. Unfortunately, this function is not currently available for messages sent to customers of other wireless operators.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't received a text message someone sent me. Why not?
Depending on your handset model, your inbox may only be able to store 24 text messages. That means that you can only store a total of 24 information messages, text messages sent from the Web or another digital handset, and Digital Youth E-Mail messages. Once you've reached your storage capacity, you will not receive any more text messages until you've cleared some space in your inbox. What can you do to avoid this problem? Either erase messages once you've read them, or periodically clean out your inbox.
