Red face When was it time to just call it quits ....

After reading that post "Say I wanted a DJ for a school dance..." ( http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=136596) it really got me thinking how a lot of people have ADD (attention defecit disorder) when it comes to music. They like songs that they either hear on the radio a lot or are less than 4.30 minutes. Other than that, they will say the song is crap and has no meaning. There are a lot of classic trance songs that do extend to 6 to 7 minutes .. sometimes even 9 minutes. Yet, the public does not adhere to the good dance beats of trance. For instance, I was bringing a friend to his house a couple of months ago, and I played "motorcycle - as the rush comes", and he asked me that the song was too extensive, boring, and loopy. The song isn't even long .. maybe about 6 minutes, comparing to other great songs. I asked him if he ever heard of the song before, and he said no.

I have had many occasions when I play stuff I download here or somewhere else, and they don't appeal to them. I get comments about my Global Underground collection, Svenson and Gielen's sets of songs, AVB's cds, etc .. Of course they have an appeal to Tiesto's songs... But I have just called it quits trying to "educate" the public with good trance music that has great beats. What you guys think? Have you ever tried to please the public with "public-defined extensive boring" songs? If we love this music and others don't, does that mean that we are high on ritalin right now ? I don't think I am high on the drug, to my extent knowledge. Maybe i am .. not sure ...

As The Rush Comes is nearly 11 minutes, actually, but ************ it may not be to everyone's tastes, especially someone who isn't used to this kind of music. Try something else if you're insistent on "converting" because you never know what someone will like. But one of the reasons someone might not get this kind of stuff is because they simply haven't been exposed to it. If you haven't heard much of any given genre, it all sounds the same until you get a better feel for its subtleties. This goes for anything from rock to rap to trance or whatever.

I have problems listening to songs that are under 6 minutes now...they just seem too short and lack content. The general public finds a song over 5 minutes too long and if it doesn't have vocals then there is no point in listening. It's quite a shame that most people don't consider it good "music" unless there are vocals.

Agreed. Not to mention most pop vocals do suck ass. I think songs that are only 3 or 4 minutes is too little to even buy a CD for. When you think about it, the average pop CD has like 12 tracks, so they are only really getting about 45 minutes worth of music on the same CD that a compilation does, which has almost 1/2 hour more music. Electronica, unlike pop and other mainstream music, is worth the money.

I was trying to get my girlfriend into trance and she likes techno and euro so I burned a CD with a lot of vocal trance and eurotrance like ATC and vocals by Jan Johnson and Alice DJ so if I get her to like the vocal/eurotrance then I'll burn her another CD with just trance prog

It's not AD&D. Everyones brain is wired differently so the chances that you'll chance a song they'll like immediately is very slim. Best bet is to introduce them to trance through classics, like Iio - Rapture (Armin Van Buuren Remix), or Solid Sessions - Janeiro (Armin Van Buuren Mix); you know, the songs that were almost mainstream. There's a Trance song for everyone, you just gotta find it.

I know I was very anti-doof doof doof for a long time, then just out of the blue I came across a Trance track that I was forced to listen to up close so I actually could here the treble and synths in detail for a change (rather than just the doof doof doof bass). It was like being hit by lightening. Total trance addict now - still hate techno doof doof doof tho .

The repetative comment I hear a lot, and a lot of Trance is reptative and boring, but that's the bad Trance. I know that when Trance is good, it's really good (most intense music I ever heard), but when it's bad, it's really really bad (repative, boring, overly long etc). Normal music like radio rock/pop etc I slot in between the two. Even bad pop/rock is not as bad as bad Trance.

Top Twenty Trance

The problem for me to get people to accept electronica as a serious genere is the phenomena I would call "top twenty trance" Where there's lots of lyrics, often repetative, and a somewhat simple beat. This makes people disrespect and categorize electronica in genreal as simple and low quality.

I usually find chillout and Jungle to work the best, dunno why though

Guess there is nothing but a slow and painful process needed to convert the deaf.

I've been listening to electronic music for so long that sometimes it seems 10 minutes is not long enough. I get so into it, the song is over in a snap.

Unfortunately the import tax you must pay on the albums here in the US is killer. Most of the good electronica CDs have to be imported because they don't have Amercian labels and they range from $17-30.

I'm sorry, but I won't pay over $15 for a CD unless it's multiple discs.

If she can stomach techno then she should be able to take trance. I'm not putting techno down, but I definately found it easier to appreciate techno more after listening to trance for awhile.

I take it that you mean "real" techno not the very loose American generalization of the word?

"Motorcycle - as the rush comes" is a bad song to ask people for their judgement of electronica. I can see how after a minute of repetitiveness it becomes pretty dull and boring... I mean there is little change in the music and rythm of "as the rush comes". It's not even banging for that matter...

that's true, take Xpander for instance or Barber's Adagio for Strings...

You cant convert everyone to electronic music. it takes a certain intelligence and open mindedness to appreciate the music and not fear leaving the herd of god damned sheep.

Edit: i are bad grammar at
