MP3PRO is aimed at the lower bitrate market, as are most recent formats. On 64kbit/s files it encodes only up to 8-10kHz and the higher harmonics are extrapolated using a technique named SBR (Spectral Band Replication, more info here ).
SBR is very efficient on lower bitrates, often used for streaming audio or distributing music samples. The higher the bitrate the smaller the quality difference from conventional codecs like mp3. Even though MP3PRO is not yet available at higher bitrates, it is very questionnable if there will be any real quality gains over the non-SBR codecs. At these bitrates all audible frequencies are already encoded in most formats.
But, at it's primary targeted bitrate it can surely compete with newer WMA and Real Audio versions.
some conclusions from r3mix.net forum visitors that tested mp3pro:
the 64kbit/s is decent and sounds surprisingly clear. Preffered over WMA and RA.
most 64kbit/s MP3PRO files can be rated to have the quality of a 112kbit/s mp3 file. This seems to be general consensus and can also be read in this listening test from ff123's site. (thanks ff123)
MP3PRO is not a substitute for mp3 on the "archival quality" field there its target use is the lower bitrates.
