What Rumsfeld is Currentely Thinking

Caught this off of the smoking gun. It's a memo leaked to the press I guess. Rather interesting to see how he formulates policy.

sounds like a typical lecture outline from one of my profs. for our discussion sessions.

Rummy is there still room to add your class?

Rumsfeld has not denied the legitimacy of the memo, he has just been downplaying it's significance.

Thanks for the link occrider....I was wondering what the memo actually said versus what was being paraphrased in the media. I would guess the administration is supremely peeved at someone in uniform . I would guess the leak was someone fairly high up who is "safe" from their KGB style witch hunts which would mean they are a fairly highly ranking member of the general staff or one of their key underlings.

Good find as always Mr. o

A follow up story on the memo:

Personally, all politics aside, I don't think that Rumsfeld did anything wrong with this memo. It appears that he's being a realist in trying to come to grips with reality of the Iraq situation and, in essence, is striving to come up with workable solutions to address those issues. It sucks that he's being lambasted for departing from the mentality of "everything is A-OK" but I guess he stepped on a few too many toes in the pentagon.

Being a secretary of defense isn't it his job to raise questions and scrutinize current strategies every once in a while?

While I do not support virtually any of Rumsfeld's policy decisions in the Pentagon, I do have more respect for him than most of the Bush cabinet outside of Powell because he always has been pretty blunt about what he thought and takes a no apologies approach to doing his job. The memo is pretty typical of what I would expect to find coming from an intelligent government official. While they may appear on the surface to be all content and happy they should be working to fix problems they see in the background.

I don't think there are more than a handful of people in DOD that would piss on Rumsfeld if he was on fire. He is on a crusade to privatize virtually all positions in the department and give them over to independent contractors.

2 reasons;

1. So we can win the war
2. So he can win the elections

There is no war ... we are attempting to secure the peace of which we have not lost. The peace is proving more difficult than realised to secure, however, the majority of Iraqis support our presence there and it is far too early to make any kind of formative judgement of ongoing efforts as is. Proper decision of whether we have "won" or "lost" the peace will come when general elections are held. No need to be premature at this point.
