Smiley DJ Apple I-Mac the STANDARD for music/graphics programs?

Hey guys, I've been thinking quite a while about starting to learn a little producing, and I was giving a serious look into Logic Audio.

A few questions:

1. The newest version of Logic Audio is only supported by Mac computers, is it worth getting a Mac laptop (such as the G4 powerbook) and make it solely for producing with Logic? This is what Josh Gabriel currently does.

2. Is it worth getting Logic Platinum over Logic Audio Big Box, it's a few hundred dollars more but seems like the Big Box has more programs.

3. What does everyone think of Logic for producing?

4. What type of computer is needed for producing, and how about soundcards?

I know I ask alot, thanks in advance though.

Ibiza

I have the similar problem but Id say.

Get a MAc G4 (or G% if you can efford it) with Logic 5.5 if you want to use VSTS, the biggest selection of software instruments

or if you can live without VST's and learn a thing or to about synthesis, get a G4 with Logic 6 and get the Vst's that now work with Logic 6 (as converted to AU-Audio Instruments) and be submitted to the great Freeze function in logic 6 that can help alot if you are using alot of CPU

as for logic itself id say yes good choice, its used by millions of pro's and seems to be the most common choice in studio's along with the mac (bar Pro-tools)
My Audio College uses it (I secretly use Friutyloops cos its funky)
and Id have to say it is good.

My personal opinion is to start out small and build up. My suggestion, and I'm sure a few others would suggest the same, is to get:
Reason or Fruityloops- They are both reasonably priced and will help you learn a lot about production. Professional productions such as Haak-Frenzy, have been made with both programs. I actually spoke to Dave Dresden about music production a while back. I told him that I was using Reason and he said that I should stick with it since it's a powerful program.

A good sound card- A search can be done. There has been so many discussions on this that will inform you about what to look for.

Monitor Speakers- Again, a search can be done on this. Recommendations from TA's run from 400 to 1300 (US). I'm hoping to get the Mackie's HR824 which run for 1,300 a pair.

After this if you still feel the need to run logic then go right ahead. At least you'll have the essentials and some knowledge that will apply to it.

Good luck

Thanks for the great advice guys, however, sorry for being nooby, but what are VSTS? Are they just synthesizer programs or sound programs to get different sounds or what? Thanks.

Good point Soltri, however bro, I know it has to be a big pain in the ass to master an already complex program such as Fruityloops or Reason, then months later have to re-learn another even more complex program such as Cubase or Logic. Know what I mean? I understand your point, but don't you think you can learn production on both programs? I don't know, I just didn't want to spend needless money and needless time learning more than 1 program ya know? I feel as if it's either all or nothing, heh. Thanks a ton though!

Also, how realistic is it to make a track with ONLY ONE program/software... without any outside instruments (such as keyboards) or any extra programs?

Evanescence - Hello (Trifactor vs Gabriel & Dresden Remix) --> LOGIC
Nathan Fake - Outhouse --> CUBASE

Don't always do something because its the standard. This is still music, a true musician can make good music without expensive equipment.

There are producers here using Reason and FL Studio that are better (sometimes much better) than those using logic and 100 outboard synths.

VST's are plugins for your programs. Most are synthesizers or effects/filters.

It is possible to create tacks with one program but it all depends on how well you know it, what samples you have, and what refills/vst's you have. Like I mentioned earlier, Frenzy was done in Reason. This song it top production and it blew me away when I found out it was done with Reason.
