So, when you play out, what do you use to record? I am in the market for a digital recorder, but most of the ones I see don't have inputs, just a mic. I would like to be able to record multiple hours, and be able to transfer it to my computer for trimming and burning.

I just thought, before I delve into my own research, someone might have an answer for me. Thanks for any help! If you have any questions, or if I wasn't clear (which happens) feel free to reply, I will be watching the thread.

I use a Tascam CD-RW700, the only problem with that is that it does limit me to 80 mins but I usually don't record the beggining of my sets anyways as it involves mostly set builders and depending on the sort of set the residents have played etc.

I have thought of gettting a hard drive recorder or something like that and would be interested to see what people say.

Yeh, I've got the same problem, my MiniDisks are also limited to 80 minits. If I want to record longer sets, up drag a computer with me...

DAT recoders are a good way to go if you have the money.
Minidisk is all crappy and lossy.
Laptops or CD recorders work well too.

Why DAT? I'm in the market too and I'm bidding on Ebay. I've bid on a Tascam CD-RW2000 and I'm winning it. What's the difference in this and the 700? Which is better? The 2000 is $900 everywhere I see it for sale so I'm guessing it's better. Does this recorder have DAT (I don't even know what it is but I'm still asking)? I also bid on an HHB CDR-850. I would like to know the difference between this and the CDR-830+. Also, what is the difference in balanced and unbalanced inputs?

DAT (Digital Audio Tape 'I think'). Fantastic quality and very useable but not always cheap.

I use a stand alone CD-RW by Tascam (The 700 as mentioned in previous post). If you are talking about preparing mix CDs for self promotion then this will do just fine. Easy to use and no messing around.

If you are talking of more proffessional in terms of producing mix CDs then you need to think more in terms of Multitrack recording devices where you can always edit the mistake. Roland make a very nice HD recorder. A reel to reel tape recorder would provide a similar function at a lower price tag but they are not always easy to find these days. These also exist in DAT format.

The CD-RW 700 is rack mountable and flightcase mountable. I have mine in a Swan flightcase so that I can take it with me when I play out. It has RCA plugs and digital inputs so will link up to any mixer. As far as I know you can't split the tracks up afterwards as you have to do that on the fly (Just press record and it splits automatically), but if anyone knows any different I would be willing to listen.

Naturally I'm not a sound expert as you can probably tell, but the CD-RWs seem to provide a good enough quality in my ears at least.
